– Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif on Monday told the Senate that 'oil mafia' in the country did not wanted to replace oil fuel with cheaper sources of electricity like coal, gas and wind.

"The country imports $16 billion oil and the people - who have great interest in it - do not want the generation shifted from oil fuel to other resources," he said in response to an adjournment motion moved by Senator Shahi Syed. The motion pertained to a report of the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority, which revealed that the efficiency of the Ministry of Water and Power was very poor and 70 per cent of the consumers were receiving over-charged bills.

"Not a single megawatt of electricity is being produced from coal as we are facing resistance in coal and LNG production, while in India 78 per cent of electricity is being produced from coal and in USA 40 per cent," he said. "Unfortunately, the generation plants in public sector are very costly and the government runs them in case of emergency in order to meet demand during peak hours," he added.

Commenting on the power outages and inflated bills received by consumers in Balochistan, Asif said the Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESCO) had less than 20 per cent of recovery due to law and order situation. He said that after laying of two transmission lines in Balochistan the electricity system has improved while after easing of international sanctions on Iran, electricity for there would also be imported.

He said payments to the independent power producers and other organisations supplying oil to the Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) had been improved, adding that just the Pakistan State Oil has some backlog. He said that there was no increase in circular debt since October 2014 and it has been caped.

Screw them both and invest in Solar & Wind:

In the US:

Consider a solar project. The sun doesn't shine at night and, even during the day, varies in brightness with the weather and the seasons. So a project that can crank out 100 megawatt hours of electricity during the sunniest part of the day might produce just 20 percent of that when averaged out over a year. That gives it a 20 percent capacity factor.

One of the major strengths of fossil fuel power plants is that they can command very high and predictable capacity factors. The average U.S. natural gas plant, for example, might produce about 70 percent of its potential (falling short of 100 percent because of seasonal demand and maintenance). But that's what's changing, and it's a big deal.

For the first time, widespread adoption of renewables is effectively lowering the capacity factor for fossil fuels. That's because once a solar or wind project is built, the marginal cost of the electricity it produces is pretty much zero—free electricity—while coal and gas plants require more fuel for every new watt produced. If you're a power company with a choice, you choose the free stuff every time.

It’s a self-reinforcing cycle. As more renewables are installed, coal and natural gas plants are used less. As coal and gas are used less, the cost of using them to generate electricity goes up. As the cost of coal and gas power rises, more renewables will be installed.

We dont really have people with high intellect....they mimic what their political parties say...Mind you some will even convince you and SHOW you that solar power is more expensive...Hack our solar power stations generate electricity at a higher rate than anyone on the planet! Hence why the votes go to oil mafia :o:

.
Screw them both and invest in Solar & Wind:
we are investing in both .. Solar in few years will touch 1000 MW and wind 250 MW ..

but for the full needs Coal is best solution since we have a huge deposits of coal ... Coal plants are cheap ..
