Obama frustrated with Pakistan: Expert

WASHINGTON:US President Barack Obama appears to be frustrated with Pakistan, which is reflected in his address to the nation from Afghanistan, an eminent American expert on South Asian issues said today.

"The President's frustration with Pakistan and its lack of cooperation in Afghanistan came through in his remarks. He said Pakistan should be part of the process to stabilise Afghanistan," said Lisa Curtis of The Heritage Foundation.

She was commenting after the US President delivered his remarks from Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan marking the first death anniversary of al-Qaida leader Osama bin Laden.

"I have made it clear to Afghanistan's neighbour - Pakistan - that it can and should be an equal partner in this process in a way that respects Pakistan's sovereignty, interests and democratic institutions. In pursuit of a durable peace, America has no designs beyond an end to al-Qaida safe-havens, and respect for Afghan sovereignty," Obama said.

Curtis said a major attack in Kabul a few weeks ago linked to the Pakistan-based Haqqani network is a reminder that terrorist sanctuaries in Pakistan continue to threaten stability in Afghanistan.

"Pakistani military leaders must be convinced that pursuing a broad crackdown on violent Islamist groups in the country will strengthen Pakistan's economic and political outlook and overall regional position," Curtis said.

Pakistani military leaders have so far resisted cracking down on Taliban and Haqqani network sanctuaries largely because of their failure to envision a new strategy that both protects Pakistan's regional interests and uproots support for terrorist activities and ideology, she said.

"Islamabad's practice of relying on violent Islamist proxies in Afghanistan (and India) has backfired badly on Pakistan and there is increasing recognition among Pakistanis that a Taliban-dominated Afghanistan would likely have a destabilizing impact on Pakistan," she said.

"US officials must build on this sentiment by convincing Pakistani leaders that unless they use their resources now to force the Taliban to compromise in Afghanistan, Pakistan will suffer from an emboldened Taliban leadership that will project its power back into Pakistan," she said.

"Moreover, Pakistan will face increasing isolation and lose credibility with the international community for continuing policies that encourage terrorism and endanger the safety of civilized nations," Curtis said.

Curtis said a Taliban victory in Afghanistan would also strengthen Islamist extremist forces in Pakistan, thus undermining civilian democracy and emboldening hard-line elements within the Pakistani security establishment, which controls the country's expanding nuclear weapons arsenal.

"Rather than basing US strategy on long-shot talks with Taliban leadership, Washington should focus its attention and resources on building up anti-Taliban elements that share the US interest in preventing Afghanistan from serving as a safe haven for international terrorists once again," she said.

But I can't see any frustration in his speech either...may be others get convinced and agreed with the title and the writers analysis and conclusion as a frustration....

To me and to my opinion (no political proficient), it is the same hatred reiterated message towards pakistan while telling WORLD COMMUNITY at the time of a big day, ANNIVERSARY of OSAMA that Pakistan is not co-operating in saying YES sir and infact obama is threatening Pakistan in his message, probably we may face sanctions (by saying isolated he means so), furhter it is telling world of our crimes having sancruies, ibases for terrorists, Pakistan is doing this and doing that....everytime USA tell the world such stories a reason and justification before taking any solid action...
MAY ALLAH help us

My opinion:
Further I've highlighted his words...he is so certain in words...he has bossy, explicit and strong and clear accents in his speech...there is no frustration at all to me...he is no requesting but commanding and threatening Pakistan...he is saying as if he is certain not doubted as he said " Pakistan has continued support and failed in continued support....

If we want to be happy by concluding it as a frustration but to me it is very conclusive as if he knows....

Is it frustration OR sense of defeat in Afghanistan without Pakistan help ? in the form of NATO supplies or intelligence ? :)

America has no designs beyond an end to al-Qaida safe-havens, and respect for Afghan sovereignty,

Curtis said a major attack in Kabul a few weeks ago linked to the Pakistan-based Haqqani network is a reminder that terrorist sanctuaries in Pakistan continue to threaten stability in Afghanistan.

ANY PROOFS MR PRESIDENT ??? IF YES CAN YOU PUBLIC THEM AS ALWAYS DEMANDED BY INDIANS ON THIS FORUM???

Oh no bro, this is all diplomatic strategy...one day they would pass resolution for Balochistan and then next day they will say it is Pakistan internal issue...It is the diplomatic strategy that you always sandwich the strong accent in sugar-quoted pleased courteus words of diplomacy...they will say in words different and then do very different...I'm not convinced they mean we know you want an equal partnership (they just bringing to our notice we know your demand of equal partner friend but see how we blow down after this 'baghal men chooree moon men raam raam')...but yes one thing is crystal clear they have some way acknowledge Pakistan importance in the problem OR possibly they are doing all to rest their egos about NATO suspension, after all they are superpower with more SUPER EGOS....

"The President's frustration with Pakistan and its lack of cooperation in Afghanistan came through in his remarks. He said Pakistan should be part of the process to stabilise Afghanistan," said Lisa Curtis of The Heritage Foundation.

Further TOI has just simply quoted the lady who analysed Obama's speech as frustration (WHY she has ignored strong and threatening message of OBAMA, saying it a frustration):

we are more deafeated than USA in this fight, look our econmy, grace in the world, stability down toward earth not sky...these people were fighting in KASHMIRE for a right cause of the people there, but we did instability to our region...Balochistan problem was more propagated by Musharaf by killing Bugtee who was OXFORD student...WE are in more trouble...May Allah take everyone out of trouble (whatever US was our friend and we are friend to our nation without compromising our gains) :pakistan: :usflag:

...US just hired us for their war and we admit we defeated than that...

We have got more problems after the defeat and what if USA and alll European nation including india keep donating money for Balochistan than our integrity is in stake...We should say apology to USA that we are friend and we will give you only the WAY out of the war but just for a limited time (say one month but at tell us first exact DEPARTURE TIME and we will be committed and wel will not charge you ) not for further fighting and stay in the region...PLEASE SIR give us a break to SOLVE OUR own problem your highness....after all we are friends and we have to see each others problems...we have fighted agaist our brother Taliban we need to have a peace in AFGHANISTAN BROTHER COUNTRY as they have suffered like PAKISTAN from the hands of SUPERPOWERS...

Dear Obama , You are frustrated now after you are having you *** kicked by the Taliban & they are your Enemies , Think of what we went trough & are still going through , When you killed our own soldiers , killed our civilians , violated our sovereignty & you were our Friend ( So Called) .

So , Dear Sir Honorable Barak Obama , GO TO HELL.

There's too much of mixing up of Lisa Curtis's remarks with Obama. Read it in that light.
Oh YES you are right, thanks bro,

YES there is too much mixing of lisa and obama...more like lisa's statement as if she is more commenting and threatening pakistan under the guise of saying 'obama frustrated' :(
