Nuke Mishap Threatens Kuwait Waters
Be On Guard, Experts Warn MEW
KUWAIT CITY, April 14: The Ministry of Electricity and Water has been warned by experts to take precautionary measures to face any crisis in case of emergencies and natural calamities, reports Al-Qabas daily.
The warning has come in the face of leakage of radio active material in case of an earthquake or another calamity of this nature.
According to sources the Ministry of Electricity and Water faces the prospect of pollution of its water resources in case of radio active material leaking from the nearby Iranian nuclear reactor which lies in Bushehr which is about 85 kms away which was a cause for worry following the earthquake last week.
The sources say given the above scenario the country will suffer from severe shortage of water.
The sources added the Iranian nuclear reactor in Bushehr is 240 kms away from the Arabian Gulf beaches and the Ministry of Water and Electricity largely depends on its desalination plants for much of its water consumption.
The sources pointed out if there is any petroleum leakage, it can put the water desalination plants out of service and the country then can get bogged down in unexpected crisis.
The sources asserted the Ministry must do all in its power, as soon as possible to ensure water security in the country.
In another development, eighty-four percent of those who participated in the recent online poll conducted by Al-Seyassah daily support the proposal to form a parliamentary committee to investigate allegations that the water in Kuwait is contaminated with bromide, while 12 percent are against the idea and four percent have no opinion.
According to the daily, most of the respondents have agreed on the need to investigate claims that the water in Kuwait contains high percentage of bromide which is dangerous to human health.
On the other hand, those against the proposal asserted there is no need to open an investigation because the reports are baseless and have been exaggerated to serve the political interests of certain people.
