NEW DELHI: India's only Russian-origin nuclear submarine INS Chakra is facing problems with its critical components affecting its operational readiness.

The 8,000-tonne submarine has been facing problems with its critical components and Russia has been asked to provide the parts for the vessel which need to be replaced, Navy sources told PTI here.

However, they did not divulge the components which would have to be replaced but indicated they are critical for the operations of the submarine.

India had inducted the Akula-II Class 'Nerpa' nuclear submarine in its inventory in April this year at the Vishakhapatnam-based Eastern Naval Command. It was renamed 'Chakra' by the Indian Navy.

The Russian submarine had met with an accident in November 2008 when it was undergoing sea trials in the Sea of Japan in which around twenty sailors were killed and several others were left injured.

The submarine was launched in 1993-94 but its construction was held up since then due to lack of funds with the Russian Navy.

However, in 2004, the Russian side decided to build it after reaching a ten-year lease agreement for operation of the submarine with the Indian side.

With INS Chakra and the yet-to-be-inducted indigenously built INS Arihant, India is planning to have two nuclear submarines guarding its vast maritime boundary.

With a maximum speed of 30 knots, Chakra can go to a depth of 600 metres and has an endurance of 100 days with a crew of 73. However, as per the lease accord, it cannot carry nuclear warheads.

The vessel is armed with four 533mm and four 650mm torpedo tubes.

India had leased and operated a Charlie-class Russian nuclear submarine, also called 'Chakra', in 1988 for training its personnel on such submarines.

Show me one country in the world which has leased out a nuclear submarine to another, shared seeker technology for missiles and helped build a nuclear submarine? And this is the first time I am hearing that the Akula class is crap!

Half the problem arises from zero planning from the MoD. You divide up an order into so many parts! You buy from one order. You order an engine from another order and the paint from another order and then forget to order the maintenance things over time. The first thing that needs to be done is to ensure requirements for maintenance and running of the equipment over a period of time is put down and then ordered along with the main order.

baffling why a so early components malfunctioning and urgent need for replacement considering the submarine was leased not a long ago and IN would have checked its functionality thoroughly during trials

I dont expect anyone to lend us anything. The problem is just not MOD its the entire bloody govt. No planing for 50 odd yrs. Russian weapons platforms for Russian forces are very different than what is given to us. It's not even the same quality. We should have been investing in our ppl from day one. The reason why we have not achieved parity with China is many but the main constraint is our govt and the corruption around which it operates. Look at Burma and what their first course of action will be. Look at Bhutan, it is investing in its ppl. Look at Singapore. We really have a knack for giving excuses but at some point enough is enough. When are we going to say we are fed up? That rape in Delhi could have been prevented if we Instituted strict punishement like death decades ago. Never proactive only inactive. We move at a snails pace.

I agreed that India have trouble even buying the sub properly.

The only critical components that I can think of the top of my head,

1) Propeller blades (I doubt this as both Akulas and Kilos use propellers with 7 blades, so spares shouldn't be an issue here)
2) Passive sonar issues (Russian submarines generally have poorer passive detection capabilities as compared to active sonar)
3) Nuclear power plant (plausible)
4) Towed sonar array (plausible)

. . . .
And we have Indian trolls like @Storm Force who troll about quality of Chinese weapons. I guess Karma is indeed a B**ch

Your new Boyfriend China is buying Submarine tech from Russia Amur. Teething problems do occur and we have Put - in :cheesy:
coming over to sort stuff about BTW arihant is coming early next year~more worry for you guys.

5/9 nuke subs of PLAN are 1970s vintage, if we have operational problems so do they. Ours are best in class. BTW heard Pakistan is making a nuke sub with laser guns and alien stealth tech......

i think the critical russian component they are talking is Russian vodka....might b crew are upset as no complimentary vodka was provided with Akula....
India shld register a strong protest with russian for this negligence...

@ my dear IN
And next time you buy/lease something used..be sure there will some problems here & there in functioning...it won't be as smooth ride as new ..so stop whining and try to sort out the problem together with russia..:hitwall:

The equipment can be only as good as the operators who handled them! Only God knows what did their Indian "experts" were doing with this sub. LOLOL...
