In a major catch for the Navi Mumbai [ Images ] Police, three persons have been arrested on charges of illegal possession of five kilograms of 'depleted uranium' even as Atomic Energy Regulatory Board said that the seized material did not pose any radiological hazard or security threat.
The trio, identified as Premsingh Savitri, Srinivas Poryar and Tulsidas Bhanushali, were arrested on Monday and produced on Tuesday before Panvel Judical Magistrate, First Class, who remanded them in police custody till December 17.

While Premsingh was held in Panvel, Srinivas and Tulsidas were arrested from Vashi in Navi Mumbai and Ghatkopar in north-east Mumbai.

The accused have been arrested under section 24(1)(a) of Atomic Energy Act for illegally possessing uranium. Possessing such material without a license from the Union government is in contravention of Atomic Energy Act, which prescribes punishment of five years or fine or both.

Commissioner of Police, Navi Mumbai, Gulabrao Pol told PTI that DU was recovered from Premsingh, a resident of Panvel, and was sent to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre for analysis. The other two accused had helped Premsingh in obtaining DU.

The analysis, done by regional director, Central Region (Exploration and Research), Mrinal Roy, confirmed the material as depleted uranium, the police commissioner said.

He, however, refused to divulge further details citing the sensitive nature of the seizure, saying, "The matter concerns national security and nothing more can be disclosed at the moment. I can only say that investigation is on."

Confirming the seized material as DU, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board Secretary Dr Ompal Singh said it, however, did not pose any radiological hazard or security threat as percentage of fissionable U-235 isotope in DU was very minute.

Depleted uranium is usually used as a shielding material in industries for radiography, Singh said that DU is also used in aircrafts as a balancing material. He also said that the source of DU -- whether from industry or from a reactor --- can be easily determined.

Wow you guys are champions of altering/exaggerating thread title. Do you even know what the meaning of the term "Proliferation". If yes, can you explain this to me how is this a case of nuclear proliferation??

Some points are highlighted below from the article to burst your "nuclear proliferation in India" bubble---

Also If I am not mistaken this topic has already been discussed here.

Nuclear Proliferation?

for some very basic fairness, as of today india still refuse to sign the NPT. being such a dangerous element in Asia, how india can blame/charge people for nuclear proliferation?

india itself is commeting nuclear proliferation.

Proliferation :woot:....Look under your base(could Not find a soft word) how much crap you have spread.

:argh:

maybe because China is a recognized nuclear power, while india is not?

just last week, russia formally refused to recognize india as a nuclear power, shall we go over this again?

.
there are six countries in this world that are legally to own nuke:

US/Russia/China/UK/FR, the five UNSC permanent members. and Pak for its aggressive neighbor which started the nuclear race in south asia.

the only problem that I have with China's nuclear policies is we still refuse to export nuclear capable missiles like JL-1/2 to Pak.

india can cry hard, but when it comes to nuke, signing the NPT is the only choice for india.

Care to add a news link that made you make this conclusion...

The logic of NPT is that a signatory...should not proliferate nuclear weapons tech..to others...and By the way its China who hhas been spreading this tech to rest of countries.....not India...

And India is doing great even by not being a signatory of NPT....Got relevant agreements for Nuclear supplies in Place....what else do you need...

when talking about the NPT and the claimed proliferation by one of its signatories, it would be nice to see some evidence. be aware, news articles are not regarded as evidence. would be better to some something from the UN.

let's face the fact --- india still refuse to sign the NPT.

are you saying any country can just withdraw from the NPT and develop their own nuke as long as they claim to keep the weapons to themselves?

such logic is just stupid.

Did you provide any evidence claiming that Russia does not recognize India as a Nuclear power...

I am still waiting for that...

By the way if you know Chinese Nuclear history in 1968... it took its sweet time...spread the tech around.. and when the purpose was done...China joined NPT.....in 1992......After helping Pakistn in 1990....

So its on India when India signs NPT....no one can force India....

Do you understand NPT...it talks about Non Proliferation...Not nuclear Research and Development for Self Use.

Talking of logic.

Hi All except ShChinese

I am preety new to this forum , so when I encountered a ShChinese then I though well maybe he is a bit confused or just that our perceptions dont match but still we can maybe come to a common conclusion but then a stream of abusive non-logical posts convinced me that he is anything but normal & that of the two people in this world who should run for the most amazing story teller/comedian award , one is ShChinese.:bunny: Sometimes I think the chinese have become so advanced in spreading their propaganda that they have unleashed a bot on this defense forums by taking over this guys id or something:toast_sign:. Seriously guys if there is one thing that this forum can be better without then its people like ShChinese and well I think someone should start a poll :mps:whether or not we want trollers like him.

@ShChinese

I am sorry but wont like to fall to your degraded levels and answer the questions that you have raised because your logic and the premise that you are using are flawed. Btw waiting for an answer related to research contribution of India in IT on the other thread.

before signing the NPT, it was 100% legal for China to transfer its selected nuke technologies to a reliable nation such as PAK. as already said by you, China signed NPT in 1992, it has never been a better time for the regime of new delhi to sign the same treaty.

India may or may not sign NPT ...this depends on India's vision...where Indians want to take their country....and no one in the world can force India to sign any agreement ....China decided on their own...so on the same lines India will decide on its own....:pop:

sure. I would 100% respect india's rights on deciding whether to sign the NPT or not. It is all up to indians.

the problem here is you can refuse to sign and keep developing nuke, but the rest of the world would label you as a trouble maker and never be trusted on global issues.

for example: is it possible for india to bid the UNSC permanent seat while refusing to sign the NPT? you know the answer from your heart.

as a Chinese, I really appreciate india's decision on not signing, it makes the best excuse for refusing to let india to play a bigger role in world affairs.

.
Well thats the choice India has to make ..and world has to accept that....Its a big game of International politics....lets see where it ends up...as of now...I see ..India being favored by most of the counties....and major powers are on India's side and the understand and respect India's stand....so thats what matters.
