Nuclear fuel enrichment plant to be set up: cost estimated at Rs 13.708 billion
ISLAMABAD (June 20 2007): Pakistan is likely to set up a nuclear fuel enrichment plant (NFEP) so that necessary material could be made easily available for its on-going nuclear activities. For this purpose, an amount of Rs 13.708 billion has been earmarked, which includes Rs 8.136 billion foreign exchange component (FEC).
The project would be considered by the Central Development Working Party (CDWP), scheduled to meet on June 28 under the chairmanship of Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Dr Akram Sheikh. Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC) Chairman would brief the CDWP members about the salient features of the project.
Overall, the CDWP would consider projects worth Rs 35 billion pertaining to energy, environment, transport and communication, health, population welfare, education, commerce, industry, governance, science and technology, higher education commission and sports.
In the energy sector, the meeting would consider a project of Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority (PNRA) aimed at strengthening regulatory infrastructure by applying innovative radioactive waste management technology to be initiated at a cost of Rs 338 million, including Rs 80 million as FEC. The CDWP would approve a proposal of Ministry of Water and Power regarding import of power from Iran for Gwadar, costing Rs 3.664 billion, including Rs 1.934 billion FEC.
In the environment sector, the CDWP would consider three projects, namely establishment of emission testing/motor vehicles examination system, Islamabad, establishment of combined effluent treatment plant and construction of conveyance system for carrying waste at Hattar industrial estate for phase-IV and Rachna Doab afforestation project costing Rs 732 million.
The CDWP would also consider four projects of transport and communications sectors ie land acquisition for Faisalabad-Khanewal Motorway M-4, 184 km), construction of bridge over river Satluj connecting Pakpattan with Minchinabad including approach road and training works, linkage of Nara Amazai and Bait Gali Union Councils of Haripur with Kala Dhaka and construction of RCC pre-stressed bridge in district Abbotabad (revised PC-I). The cost of these projects is estimated at Rs 5.623 billion.
Other projects include establishment of Federal Drought Recovery Assistance Program Project (DRAPP)/ DERA-II (second revision), agro- food processing facilities at Multan, construction of office accommodation for National Accountability Bureau (NAB), Rawalpindi phase-I, construction of judicial and administration complex in Mouve area sector G-10/1 Islamabad.
The projects, like construction of sports stadium at Taxila and international university Gilgit (Northern Areas), establishment and development of Islamia University, Bahawalpur sub-campus at Rahim Yar Khan, establishment of college of agriculture at the Islamia University Bahawalpur, and establishment of Islamia university's sub-campus at Bahawalnagar would also be considered by the CDWP.
