Nobel Prize could go to a Chinese dissident this year
OSLO: The Nobel Peace Prize could go to a Chinese dissident this year as a way of keeping human rights pressure on Beijing as it basks in the glow of a successful Olympics, an expert said on Wednesday. “The prize this year will finally go to a Chinese dissident and I believe that the most likely is Hu Jia, perhaps together with his wife,” said Stein Toennesson, director of the International Peace Research Institute in Oslo. “He has become the most well-known Chinese dissident.” Hu is an ardent campaigner for civil rights, environmental protection and AIDS advocacy in China.

Does this mean the nobel peace prize is awarded on the basis of certain political considerations rather than merit.

Of course! Nobel Prize is a western prize. The judges are westerners. They have to evaluate the candidates based on their philosophy, tradition, culture and values. This is more so in the area of humanity, which unlike science there are no hard criteria.

You are absolutely right! Hu Jia receives foreign fund to run his political activities in China for apparently serving foreign purposes. This is one of the reasons put him behind bars.

I'd rather Dalai lama gets the price again for agitating Tibet.
