WASHINGTON, D.C -- The United States, which has reported the world's worst overall COVID-19 death toll, has "no doubt" been undercounting fatal cases, top pandemic advisor Anthony Fauci said Sunday.

The country has officially lost over 581,000 people to the disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus -- but a University of Washington study released Thursday estimated deaths at more than 900,000.

"That's a bit more than I would have thought the undercounting was," Fauci told NBC's "Meet The Press."

"But I think there's no doubt... that we are and have been undercounting."

The United States has reported over 32.6 million cases since the virus was first identified at the end of 2019 in China.

America was battered by a spike in cases and deaths after the end-of-year holidays, but since January new infections have come down as vaccination rates have jumped.

"We are turning the corner. We have 58 per cent of adult Americans with at least one shot, over 110 million Americans fully vaccinated," White House COVID-19 coordinator Jeffrey Zients told CNN's State of the Union.

President Joe Biden wants 70 per cent of adults in the US to have received at least one shot of the COVID-19 vaccine by the July 4 Independence Day holiday.

But the rate peaked around April 10 and has been declining since then, with vaccine hold-outs slowing the race to population immunity.

Federal, state and local officials are partnering with pharmacies, restaurants, breweries, supermarkets and sports teams to come up with incentives to get people to get their shots.

In New Jersey, Governor Phil Murphy launched a "Shot and a Beer" program to encourage vaccination, while in West Virginia Governor Jim Justice announced that the state will offer US$100 savings bonds to residents aged 16 to 35 who get inoculated.

So that's true for the whole world not only for USA, that's also includes China and Canada

No doubt every country has under counted. It isn't physically feasible to test every single body.

Under counting means more variants are left uncaught. So more and more waves are expected in the coming years.
So that's true for the whole world not only for USA, that's also includes China and Canada

Most countries under count by a factor of 2 to 3 at least.

COVID will become endemic to the global population. That is why vaccinations are and will remain crucial.

There is no silver bullet for all the variants...bigger question is how many doses of the same vaccine or mish mash of vaccines can a person take?

Once most of the world reaches herd immunity through vaccinations or recover from an infection, the major vaccine suppliers could, I assume but don’t quote me on it, start to make trivalent or quadrivalent COVID vaccines similar to the influenza vaccines, with the most virulent 3 or 4 strains going around, and vaccinate the people for it.

I doubt people will get a booster of the same vaccination they have just gotten.

It is shocking to read the comments here. Can't belive this forum is full of sheeple. Go and read what these vaccines are. They are not really vaccines they are gene modifiers that leave your immune system weaker. Please go and read about it and don't BS

Kindly don't tag me again, ever.

This proves the Americans are actually in the middle of the third and biggest wave of infections. They lie when they claim their vaccines are bringing the epidemic under control!

This is definitely true with every country however in case of third world countries where people do not even get tested and even deaths are not reported to medical offices, it is severely undercounted.

Herd immunity never works. Virus mutates and results in another wave. If heard immunity works, there wouldn't be flu. In reality, there is flu every year since dawn of humanity.
