Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker NIO (NYSE: NIO) delivered 7,225 vehicles in January, up 352.1% year-on-year and setting a new monthly record.

The deliveries consisted of 1,660 ES8s, a 6-seater, and 7-seater flagship premium smart electric SUV, 2,720 ES6s, a 5-seater high-performance premium smart electric SUV, and 2,845 EC6s, a 5-seater premium electric coupe SUV.

As of January 31, 2021, cumulative deliveries of the ES8, ES6 and EC6 reached 82,866 vehicles.

NIO defies Tesla Model Y price cuts in China and delivers record 7,225 units in Jan-cnEVpost

The delivery volume for NIO is unexpectedly high, as January is considered to be the month where it will be hit the hardest by the dramatic price reductions of the China-made Tesla Model Y.

On January 1, the China-made Tesla Model Y went on sale, with the long-range and performance versions priced at RMB 339,900 and RMB 369,900 respectively, down RMB 148,100 and RMB 165,100 respectively from the previous imported version.

After this announcement, the order page on Tesla's website was down for a while. Tesla Weibo on the same day in Weibo, the official website order page may be temporarily unable to refresh due to the surge of visits.

Then there were rumors that China-made Model Y orders exceeded 100,000. However, Tesla insiders said that the figure was exaggerated, but indeed sales were hot.

On January 3, William Li Bin, chairman of NIO, said that the pricing of the China-made Model Y was higher than he expected and that he had expected it to be within 300,000 yuan.

NIO, considered the "Chinese version of Tesla," is seen as facing severe competitive pressure. Citi analyst Jeff Chung downgraded NIO from Buy to Neutral in early January but raised his price target 47 percent to $68.30 from $46.40.

NIO launched its first sedan, the NIO ET7, with a maximum range of more than 1,000 kilometers and a price starting at 448,000 yuan ($69,000) without subsidies at NIO Day 2020 on Jan. 9.

Chung said the ET7 is good, but not enough to make any significant changes to the challenges Tesla faces.

He estimated that incremental sales of the ET7 will be limited to about 3,000 to 4,000 units per month, starting in the first quarter of 2022.

The analyst added that the ET7 could also be challenged by future revisions of Tesla's Model S, while a price cut for the Model Y could create head-to-head competition with NIO's EC6.

But this judgment is not the same as what William Li Bin, founder, chairman and CEO of NIO, thinks.

In an interview with media including cnEVpost in Chengdu on January 10, Li said that Tesla's Model S, with a price over RMB 700,000, will definitely not be able to match the sales of ET7.

Li also said that what Tesla is doing may not be suitable for NIO. Car companies need to consider whether the product and service experience can match the corresponding price, and they also need to consider the user value and target customer group.

In January, NIO made adjustments from battery swap service to increase user rights and benefits, and this move was also seen as NIO's move to fight against Tesla's price reduction

Tesla and Apple seem to share a same formula for success:

Both are US brands, but built by East Asian technologies, Chinese labor and Chinese quality.
Nonsense with asian technology
That here is the heart of every Tesla: a central mini computer, developed in silicon valley. The hardware itself is made by Nvidia. If you can copy it you can make Tesla.

@AViet is not wrong.

Although headquartered in Santa Clara, California, Huang said Nvidia boasts "a few thousand" employees in China, as well as many partners covering the company's supply chain.

With Huang the boss himself a Taiwanese Chinese " Citizenship: Republic of China; United States"

Nvidia or Tesla will never achieved success if they decide to build their factory or center in other countries.

They will end up with overprice, lower quality and behind schedule product which no one wants to buy...

You don't need the rest of the car? The chip drives itself around? It doesn't need a powertrain, battery, motor, wheel, chassis, materials, industrial robots and process, like every single other car company in the world? Just the chip?

Sure, a car has more parts than just a minicomputer, there are wheels, battery, etc. however these parts are easier to make. I mean there must be a reason why Tesla market cap is bigger than the next 10 carmakers combined.

Chinese electric vehicle (EV) maker NIO (NYSE: NIO) built seven new battery swap stations in January and plans to build 12 more before the Chinese New Year that falls on February 12 this year.

NIO mentioned the plan when it released its January vehicle delivery figures on Monday. The company delivered 7,225 vehicles in January, up 352.1 percent from a year earlier, another record high.

Late last month, NIO said it had 179 battery swap stations, 101 Superchargers, 820 superchargers, and access to more than 360,000 third-party charging posts as of January 21, 2021.

NIO customers enjoy free lifetime off-site recharge service and 12 free annual off-site recharge services.

On January 24, the company announced that consumers who order ES8, ES6, and EC6 from now on can enjoy the following free lifetime battery swap benefits.

Those who choose the exclusive charging pile entitlement will receive four free battery swap services per month.

Those who waive the home charging stake entitlement will have the first 6 battery swap service fees waived each month.

All entitlement adjustments are expected to take effect on March 1.

This policy adjustment is also seen by some users as a move to counter Tesla's price reduction.

For owners of new energy vehicles, mileage anxiety and charging convenience have been major issues for them.

In August 2019, NIO launched a free lifetime battery swap service policy to address users' mileage anxiety and charging convenience.

I think, to be able to remain competitive, they will need to continue with deep price cuts.

And the critical part is a component made by Nvidia, not Tesla, comprising less than 10% of the value of the vehicle?

Are stocks correlated to corporate profit?

Here is a supplier list of Tesla.
The key components, i.e., the battery, the motor, etc. are all supplied by Asian companies (for Tesla made in China, mainly by Chinese companies). Tesla only has the battery management tech of its own. The chips for electronic control are supplied by Nvidia which you can say at least half Asian tech, as explained by @sinait . Don't see Asia as vn in terms of technology. You have such inferiority complex because you have ZERO tech, but we are NOT like you...

Battery easy to make? I see only Japan, Korea, and China make practical high performance car batteries... I doubt if vn makes a battery for your flashlight... :rofl:

I said the components are easier to make not easy, easier in terms of technology difficulty. Electric motor is less complex than conventional motors. Certainly battery is not easy for everyone to make. I understand a bit how things are put together. Nio uses solid state lithium battery to power the cars. There are companies in China, Korea and Japan that dominate the market. Not good at all. Because they control the market. They dictate the price. As for VN, keep laughing, VF cooperates with Kreiselelektrik and LGchem, I am pretty sure, we will have own battery making companies in the near future.

Are you speaking english? What nonsense are you talking about? EV Battery technology is high end product. You need large amount of funds to inject for research and continue upgrade.

Rich and powerful manufacturing base countries like Japan, China and SK are more likely to succeed for high end EV battery that has higher energy density, safer ,faster charging and long cycle life.

You talk as if you are always a country of hightec. The technology of today’s lithium battery was invented in Japan, it was used in Sony’s Walkman. In a time when bicycles were means of transportation in China.

Stock prices are correlated with “future” profits.

Your talks are outdated. Now in 2020, China can put 25tons of payload into space which Japanese can only dream of and return nearly 2 kg of moon sample which Soviet and Russia can't do it..

So your point is irrelevant. :enjoy:
