The NIMR is a wheeled armoured vehicle produced by NIMR Automotive for the United Arab Emirates armed forces. NIMR Automotive is a joint venture between state-owned Tawazun Holding (60%) and Abu Dhabi-based Bin Jabr Group (40%).

The UAE Army placed a contract for 500 NIMR vehicles in early 2005. Another $145.4m order was placed for 1,000 NIMR high-mobility tactical vehicles on the final day of IDEX in February 2011. The UAE Ministry of Interior placed an order for an additional 200 NIMR vehicles in March 2012.

In February 2009, Libya signed a contract with Bin Jabr for 120 NIMR 4x4 vehicles for the Libyan Armed Forces.

By May 2012, more than 1,800 NIMR 4x4 and 6x6 variants had been ordered, of which more than 509 vehicles have been delivered.

NIMR mission capabilities
"By May 2012, more than 1,800 NIMR 4x4 and 6x6 variants had been ordered."
The NIMR family of armoured vehicles are made in various configurations for a range of battlefield requirements.

Such requirements include combat management, close-in situational awareness, reconnaissance and surveillance.

The major variants include the Armoured Command Vehicle 4x4, Single Cabin Cargo 4x4, Armoured Personnel Carrier 6x6, Extended Wheel Base - Multi Purpose 6x6, Armoured Patrol Vehicle 6x6, Open Top 4x4, Station Wagon 4x4 and the Double Cabin Cargo 4x4.

Al Fahd Armoured Vehicle

The Al Fahd armoured vehicle has been developed by the Abdallah Al Faris Company for Heavy Industries, which is based in Saudi Arabia at Damman, just north of Dharan near the coast of the Persian Gulf.

The development of NIMR vehicle was originally undertaken by Emirates Defence Technology (EDT). Detailed engineering and prototype of the first NIMR 1 vehicle was completed by the engineers from Industrial Computer Technologies, a subsidiary of Russia's GAZ (Gorky Automobile Plant). Further development of the NIMR family of 4x4 and 6x6 vehicles was carried out by the Bin Jabr Group.

The first batch of three prototypes was rolled out in 2000. Production continued in Jordan at Advanced Industries of Arabia (AIA), established by King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) and Bin Jabr Group.

The Bin Jabr Group teamed up with MBDA and Rheinmetall Defence Electronics (RDE) to develop NIMRAD (NIMR Air Defence) and NIMRAT (NIMR Anti-Tank) anti-armour / anti-bunker vehicles based on the NIMR 4x4 vehicle. The NIMRAD vehicle was first demonstrated at IDEX in February 2007.

In February 2009, state-owned Tawazun Holding and Bin Jabr signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to set up a joint venture for the development of NIMR vehicle. The new company, called NIMR Automotive, manages the production facilities of NIMR range of vehicles in Jordan. It plans to move the production facilities from Jordan to the Tawazun Industrial Park in Abu Dhabi.

Design of the NIMR APC
The NIMR's design incorporates composite ceramic armour. The modular design allows the integration of modules to support different missions.

The 6x6 APC can transport up to 12 soldiers. Designed to operate in the Middle East's harsh desert climate, the NIMR has a cooling system for enabling operations in temperatures of up to 55°C.

The NIMR vehicles are equipped with electronics, electro-optics, power management and communication systems supplied by DRS Technologies.

The platform can also be integrated with electronic countermeasures and stabilised overhead weapon systems. Optional equipment includes a winch, NBC system, GPS, ABS and a universal gun mount ring.

Self-protection, engine and mobility of the military vehicle
The NIMR armoured personnel carrier is provided with level 1 baseline mine and ballistic protection.

"The vehicle can protect the crew from small arms fire, hand grenades, artillery shell fragments and small explosive devices."
The vehicle can protect the crew from small arms fire, 7.62mm rounds, hand grenades, artillery shell fragments and small anti-personnel explosive devices. It can be fitted with add-on armour offering STANAG 4569 level three mine and ballistic protection.

The NIMR is powered by a Cummins ISBe300 turbo 6.7l six-cylinder diesel engine coupled to the Allison S 3000 six-speed automatic transmission. The engine delivers a power of 300hp. The power to weight ratio of the vehicle is 23.4hp/t.

The vehicle, fitted with a double wishbone independent suspension over coil springs, offers high ground clearance. The Bin Jabr patented central tyre inflation system (CTIS) enables the vehicle to travel on rough terrain with great comfort.

The NIMR can negotiate a gradient of 60% and vertical obstacle of 0.5m. The vehicle has a maximum road speed of over 130km/h and range of 800km.

UAE vehicle maker Nimr plans new production facility

Tawazun Holding's vehicle manufacturer Nimr Automotive has broken ground on its new manufacturing facility in Abu Dhabi which aims to double current production.

The facility is expected to be fully operational by October 2015, the company said in a statement.

Saif Mohamed Al Hajeri, CEO of Tawazun, said the new facility was a testament to the popularity of the UAE-made Nimr vehicles in its home market and across the world.

"The new integrated facility, the first of its kind in the region, will help Nimr Automotive re-establish itself as a well-recognised brand in the international military vehicles industry and render it in better position to serve its growing customer base," he added.

Fares Khalaf Al Mazrouei, chairman of Nimr Automotive, added: "We are very proud of this achievement which, one year from now, will see Nimr production capacity doubled. This will help cater to the needs of the local market and future market demands."

The factory will have a built up area of 37,000 square metres in addition to a test track and service centre.

The facility will operate a complete production cycle of vehicle design, development, prototyping, testing and serial production, involving a combination of semi and full automation.

The project is being developed by Arabtec Construction, the statement added.
