Next trial for Ram Rahim: Two murder cases
CBI to submit final arguments in murder trials against Dera chief Ram Rahim on September 16
September 16 will be a crucial date for Dera Sacha Sauda chieftain Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) will submit its final arguments in the case on the said date in both the murder cases hanging fire against the self-styled spiritual guru.
This would mean that the verdict in the two murder trials will shortly be pronounced after final arguments of CBI and Ram Rahim’s lawyers. It is pertinent to mention here that the Punjab and Haryana High Court last month had set a deadline of three months for the special CBI Court to conclude the trial in the murder of Ram Chander Chhatrapati.
The journalist was allegedly murdered by Dera men at the behest of Ram Rahim for probing the rape allegations against him. Another murder trial of Dera Sacha Sauda’s manager Ranjeet Singh is also in the final leg. The conviction of Ram Rahim Singh in the rape case has given a fresh ground to the CBI. Top CBI sources told ET that the agency will argue on the antecedents of Ram Rahim, who now stands guilty of raping two of his female followers.
“Antecedents of an accused hold prime importance during a trial. If an accused is found to have doubtful antecedents the case against him is strengthened. In the instant case, Ram Rahim now stands guilty of rape. This will be contended in the final arguments (in murder trials) before the court”, a top agency official told ET on the condition of anonymity.
It might be mentioned here that to delay the trials against him, Ram Rahim had filed a total of over 60 petitions in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. All these were dismissed by the High Court after CBI lawyers stoutly opposed the same. While, as per HC order, the deadline to conclude one of the murder trials ends in October, the CBI’s legal team is hopeful of getting an order in September.
