New world order - U.S. unilaterally determines everything
The United States withdrew from the TPP, withdrew from the Paris accord, and now withdraws from the Iranian nuclear agreement. What Trump has done since he took office reflects not only "U.S. priorities," but also looks more like "U.S. alone."
The unilateral exercise of power by the United States is a concept that has long attracted John Bolton, the White House’s new national security adviser. In a speech in 2000, Bolton said: "If I were to rebuild the (United Nations) Security Council today, I would set up only one permanent member because it would truly reflect the global power distribution."
Today, the U.S. president who Bolton has worked for is equally dismissive of international cooperation. Trump’s move to let the United States withdraw from the Iranian nuclear agreement was a refusal of requests from leaders of France, Germany and the United Kingdom.
The decision to withdraw from the Iranian nuclear agreement is just the latest and most serious manifestation of the Trump administration’s pursuit of radical unilateralism. Last June, Trump led the United States withdrawing from another major international agreement, the Paris Climate Change Agreement. This week, the United States has moved its embassy in Israel to Jerusalem. This highly symbolic move has been opposed by all major US allies. Trump also launched an attack on the global trading system - threats not only to China, but also to impose high tariffs on key allies such as Japan, Canada and the European Union.
These policies reflect not only "America First" but also more and more "American Alone".
