This dedicated service will provide detailed information about the neighbouring country's war strategy.
They say you should keep your friends close, but your enemies closer. The National Defence Academy (NDA) sure wants to teach its cadets how to do that. After setting up a China room inside its Army Training Team (ATT) in May last year, the premier joint training institution for the nation's aspiring armymen has now decided to establish a 'Pak Info Room', which will provide information regarding Pakistan's armed forces.
The room will be established on the academy's campus and is likely to be opened for the upcoming 134th course in a couple of months. The objective behind establishing the room is to provide exact details about Pakistan's weapons, defence budget, tactics, terrain, history and so on to cadets.
Talking about the room, NDA sources informed, "This is part of their professional grooming on service aspects of defence as officers are expected to be aware of India's neighbours. This room will continuously be updated with latest photographs, statistical data, information and analyses of certain war tactics as well to give cadets an in-depth understanding of Pakistan's defence strategy."
Welcoming the move, Lt Gen D B (Retd) Shekatkar, a commander with experience in combating insurgency in the North-East, said, "A dedicated room is the need of the hour as these cadets are going to become officers of the Indian armed forces in the near future. So, they should know all about our neighbour — its weapons and their characteristics, training, background, finance, its international relations with other countries and so on. It's a positive step by the NDA to introduce a dedicated room on Pakistan. The Indian Army's regimental centre should set up a similar room that operates in regional languages so that jawans of each centre get full information about Pakistan. This would eventually help them prepare for operations."
According to NDA sources, if cadets get a dedicated room for Pakistan, they can visit it frequently and study about our neighbour in detail. "This exercise will certainly help make their basics strong. At present, we provide information to the cadets through various discussions, lectures and available information. But the dedicated room will give them a better opportunity to explore certain areas of Pakistan, which is quite essential considering the times."
The NDA's training entails equipping cadets with mental, moral and physical attributes required to cope with the challenges of the battlefield. It aims to lead troops to victory in conventional, non-conventional and asymmetrical conflicts. The academy has also incorporated enhanced weapon training tactics and field craft/battle craft inside the ATT. Laser class boats and navigational simulators have been added to the naval training team and the number of Super Dimonas at the Air Force Training Team has gone up, sources said.
A colonel of the Indian Army told Mirror, "Considering the future, a strong understanding of neighbouring war strategies needs to be inculcated in cadets at the academy's level itself." The NDA syllabi encompass science, technology, arts and military subjects. The three-year course is split into six terms, after which a cadet is awarded a bachelors degree from the Jawaharlal Nehru University. The regimen consists of physical conditioning which includes drill, swimming, horse-riding, games and adventure activities.
