Nato strikes alternate supply route deals through Central Asia | DAWN.COM

BRUSSELS: Nato has concluded agreements with Central Asian nations allowing it to evacuate vehicles and other military equipment from Afghanistan and completely bypass Pakistan, which once provided the main supply route for coalition forces.

Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said Monday that Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan had agreed to allow the reverse transport of alliance equipment.

Since Nato already has an agreement with Russia, the deal will allow it to ship back to Europe tens of thousands of vehicles, containers and other items through the overland route when the evacuation picks up pace later this year.

Pakistan shut down the southern supply routes six months ago after US airstrikes killed 24 Pakistani soldiers at the Salala border post, forcing Nato to switch almost completely to the so-called Northern Distribution Network.

After months of stalemate, Pakistani leaders last month signaled that negotiations on the supply routes were progressing, just in time to secure an invitation to the weekend Nato summit in Chicago. But since then the two sides have made little progress in the talks, officials said.

The announcement on Monday appears to indicate that Washington and the allies are now preparing for the possibility that the supply link through Pakistan, said to be about six times cheaper than its northern alternative, may not be reopened at all. It is also likely to put pressure on Pakistan to ease its negotiating stance, which has been stuck in part on how much money the US and Nato should pay to transport the trucks through Pakistani territory.

Nato plans to hand over lead responsibility for the war against the Taliban to the Afghan army and police by the middle of next year, and withdraw its troops by the end of 2014. The alliance already has started drawing down its forces, which reached a peak of about 140,000 last year.

The Afghan security forces will have more than 350,000 members in the next few months. The international withdrawal is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2014.

“These agreements will give us a range of new options and the robust and flexible transport network we need,” Fogh Rasmussen told reporters.

He said the new deals would make “the use of the Russian transit arrangements even more effective.”

Moscow also has proposed allowing Nato to set up a logistics facility at the air base in Ulyanovsk, Russia, for troops and cargo heading in and out of Afghanistan.

lol here goes pakistan's only remaining trump card.

.
It doesn't mean in anyway that Pakistan isnt relevant in this conflict anymore or Pakistan has lost this card. It just means, they are creating another backup and trying to reduce dependency on Pakistan.

Supply routes aside, West cannot solve Afghanistan without Pakistan.

not yet, could be pressure tactics.

.
That is nice.....but i would like to know how much cost per container will NATO face through Central Asia.??

If you are pissed at times it does not matter if you are getting a good deal. Pakistan is going to lose too.

Article says 6 times more, but other countries have not received 20 billion dollars in aid.

Neither does Pakistan.... stop misleading and talk about 5 year long, Pakistani transit aid to Indians.

Approximately, 150 Indian trucks come through Wahga border, only.

@ meager cost of $5000/truck, the total transit aid to India, from this single channel amounts = $9'125'000
Sponsored by the tax payers of Pakistan. I'm not counting the aid which Zardair hand out to Indians covertly and overtly.

I am not pissed, but it sounds like being a typical Indian that half news is making your day.

Anyway, majority of Pakistani public is against opening that route, so if they permanent arrange it from other side, it would just save Pakistani roads.

So Panetta and co have agreed to a much more expensive route than the one they were offered by Pakistan

All this shows is that it is just American arrogance that is at play in the Pakistan-US dealings, their 'dhoi' catches fire when Pakistan makes legit demand and us being Muslim it becomes too much for their ego to agree hence they spew vomit about not being ‘price gouged’ by Pakistan but in the end they have agreed to let Russia ride them at much higher price but not agree to what Pakistan asked them.

Their arrogance will bring about their end that much is quite obvious.

.
thank god now please forget us as our route we bleed enough because we help you guys.bye forever NATO-USA .

My indian fellows here are very happy (because they are always happy when Pakistan losses sumthing) but they dont know that we didnt loose anything , we are more happy than they are :yahoo:.

We are step by step getting ourselves out of the mess created by the our former president. I would be very delighted when the consulate (terrorist den) of American will be closed in Pakistan.

Hmm....Ye to hona hi tha...

Now lets wait for pakistan's reply to this...
