The deteriorating relations between the West and Russia due to the Ukrainian crisis won’t the cooperation between NATO and Russia on Afghanistan, NATO officials said.
No grounds exist that this situation could have any negative impact on holding NATO operations in Afghanistan, NATO Military Committee Chairman General Knud Bartels said when answering media questions following a meeting of military officials of the alliance member countries on Thursday, according to Interfax. The current state of affairs remains in effect until the arrival of new political decisions, he said.
NATO's commander in Europe General Philip Breedlove said that the return route via Russia NATO is using has not changed and the mission of the International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan has spheres which are of interest for Russia in terms of cooperation with NATO. Opium production and drug trafficking from Afghanistan hits Russia much stronger than NATO countries, he pointed out.
NATO and Russia have mutual interest to continue cooperation in certain areas, Breedlove also said, and as of now, no deterioration of the ISAF position in Afghanistan due to the events in Ukraine is occurring, he added.
