Says the person who must know it: Horst Telschik. He served as Germany’s government advisor during negotiations.

Americans have no foothold in The Old World. You cannot dominate the world unless you can dominate The Old World.

We all KNOW no such undertaking was ever given.
How do you stop countries who plead with you for years that they want common defence from a rapacious expansionary threat that Russia has demostrated several times before.
The Czechs the Poles the Hungarians the Georgians the Romanians have ALL been invaded by Russia and digested and made part of Russia

Now it the Ukrainians, but even the Finns have tasted Russian expansionism

I have missed out several other countries in this list

Said you?

The Old World is the most important part of the world. You cannot dominate the world unless you dominate The Old World. In terms of population, The New World pales in comparison to The Old World.

I guess it depends...
There was no formal agreement but a gentlemen's understanding of sorts.

U.S. Secretary of State James Baker’s famous “not one inch eastward” assurance about NATO expansion in his meeting with Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev on February 9, 1990, was part of a cascade of assurances about Soviet security given by Western leaders to Gorbachev and other Soviet officials throughout the process of German unification in 1990 and on into 1991, according to declassified U.S., Soviet, German, British and French documents posted today by the National Security Archive at George Washington University (http://nsarchive.gwu.edu).

...

The documents reinforce former CIA Director Robert Gates’s criticism of “pressing ahead with expansion of NATO eastward [in the 1990s], when Gorbachev and others were led to believe that wouldn’t happen.”[1] The key phrase, buttressed by the documents, is “led to believe.”

There is no such thing as gentlemen agreement in geopolitics. That’s worthless.

People cite the statement of James baker. However he is just a foreign minister he has no authority to promise anything.

Only the words of US president matter.

Or words from government chiefs from Germany, UK or France.

And even spoken, the words of government chiefs must be then in writing and must be approved by parliaments.

If there is not such a thing as gentlemen's agreement, don't expect anyone in the party being a gentleman.

unification of Germany was agreed on one principle by soviet that nato will not go to east Germany. As we all know putin was appointed there as KGb officer and he was himself witness of unification of Germany. So putin knows everything more then anybody. I mean more then anybody in present leadership of Eu and USA

Russian were attack by napoleon in 1812 and then Hitler 19z . They never attacked Europe in first hand. I believe this is retaliation against nato reaching on its borders. So please read history first

Has anyone ever asked the Poles,Estonians,Latvians,Czech,Hungarians etc. why their country has joined NATO ?

Are you 5y old? Gentlemen? What is that? You are naive. If someone promise to you a red elephant, you believe he will deliver?
I give you a tip.
You insist he must give his promise in writing. If he fails to deliver a red elephant you can sue him court.

So it means now Russia is right to even claim back east Germany?
Berlin Wall 2 coming up again ?

In my opinion. If russia attack them way they attack Ukrain,no one gona come to help them . But if russia attack France uk n Germany. people from these poor countries will used to defend rich countries. These countries are like buffer zone for uk,France n Germany.

He is asking one simple thing. Give me in writing that Ukraine will not join nato. This one line can finish misery of Ukraine and for european. Ukraine is first wood to burn in house. It is same like Iraq as first wood in arab world then fire goes on. Let see where this fire ends and how many houses it will burn in next ten years.
War is business if normal person from Ukraine n Europe realise it has much more profit and then this war will become franchise business way it was franchise in arab world or Afghanistan. All in all I am afraid stupidity from Europen leaders gona bring horror for Europen community. Sometimes I feel if it is just a start of new european wars. Like nations wars. But this time gona get deadly as hell
