Weak can’t take hard decisions: NSA

National Security Adviser (NSA) Ajit Doval on Thursday said plenty of forces within the country were focussed on eroding the will of the nation, and stressed that India needed a strong, stable and decisive government for the next 10 years to achieve its political, economic and strategic objectives.

Delivering the annual Sardar Patel Memorial Lecture in the national capital, Mr. Doval said unstable regimes were more prone to fragility and corruption, adding that weak governments were unable to take hard decisions that wee good for the people but not necessarily populist in nature. He said it was not possible to alienate the country from the international oil prices and it was a phase [of high petroleum price] that would soon be over, probably in six or eight months.

‘False narratives’
He said corruption undermined the “rule of law” that governed the country and “false narratives” had the power to destabilise the nation.

The NSA said all “private sector is not traitor” and “suspecting every corporate” would create an environment where they cannot grow and it would impact the economy.

“India cannot afford to be a soft power… if it becomes a soft power, then we will have to make compromises and you make compromises when your political survival takes precedence over national interests… India will have to have governments which are stable, decisive… a fragmented polity can considerably make it impossible for India to realise its dreams, because weak governments are unable to take hard decisions,” Mr. Doval said.
