That is because you accord far too much importance to politics based on religion and identity politics in your calculus- it shows in the ideal situation that you have in mind for Pakistan itself- you cannot bare to discard Islam and frame a governance form divorced from religion. The opposite is happening in fact, in the last 10 years I've met more and more Muslims in India who exhibit greater traits of secularism than even the Hindus. It is a fools dream to imagine that a growing Muslim populace will put India in a tight spot. It is exactly the malarkey that the RSS spouts. Extremist elements are present, but they are neither exclusive to the Muslims nor capable of actually waging a "war" against the state.
Any movement to assert their rights through religion in opposition to the Indian Constitution will simply get crushed anyway-
if someone openly disregards the tenets of my constitution then they get hunted down- IF it ever occurred then I would be the first one to get out and hunt all such fiends, be they Hindu (demanding a Hindu rashtra) or Muslims (demanding a sharia state) and put an end to their miserable existence. Fortunately enough our state has always had the fortitude and stamina to meet all odds without breaking up unlike a certain neighbor of ours.
Besides you should not assume that Muslims around the world are a homogeneous community suffering from the same affliction of blind adherence to religion and treating it like a panacea- nope some of them can live perfectly within a secular and democratic state without causing issues- case in point Turkey @
Hyperion.
Of course & its not just me its the same for Muslims all over the world ! Even in a country like Turkey, the Secularists, are going ape-sh*t over the possibility of what appears to be an Islamic Party. In the rest of the Middle East wherever you saw Dictatorships fall the vacuum was filled by Islamic parties as a whole or as part of a coalition ! Besides how many Secular Muslim States are out there ?
You guys still don't get it - The Secular Elite in Pakistan is exponentially greater than the Secular Elite amongst Indian Muslims; you just have to click onto a Pakistani Channel or read a leading Newspaper to gauge that. And yet they are a minority amongst another minority - the Educated Elite.
Furthermore I never talked about any Extremist elements; you forget we Muslims & Hindus had existed in the Indian Subcontinent for centuries & yet when push came to shove - We butchered each other like sheep ! The preamble to that was of course we - the Muslims - started asserting ourselves more. You must understand the demand for Pakistan didn't just manifest itself out of thin air; it went from more rights, to separate electorates, to constitutional guarantees & then finally when all options were exhausted we demanded a separate country ! Now whether those demands were justified or not is immaterial, what is material, on the other hand, is the ownership of the masses.
Similarly the fears of the RSS & others are not completed unfounded - You can live in your Utopia if you please & by all means do but the fact of the matter is, that History has shown, whenever Muslims find themselves in a power to assert....they do it ! And when they'll assert, when they'll start talking about certain injunctions of the Shariah, of Islamic Finance or some other Muslim (not Islamic) protectionism policy, all the events that led up to '47 will have a repeat !
Some food for thought - Ever wondered why people like Zakir Naik is able to draw audiences in the hundreds of thousands whilst Secular Muslims like Akbar are hard pressed to garner even a few thousand of them & next to no who are the religious kind (that most Muslims being uneducated & illiterate are - across the board) ?
P.S I'm not feeling any glee out of this, if thats what you think ! Believe me - I don't want this but as a student of history & that Muslim history & Islamic polity - I do know what I'm talking about !
P.P.S The Indian Muslims aren't going forget how we ditched them in '47 & no its not going to be all lovey dovey between us so I really am not looking forward to it !
