Islamabad—Paying a glowing tribute winner of 100 meters race the Senate on Wednesday called for the government to honour Naseem Hameed for being the fastest woman in South Asia with civil award as well as job along with professional training.

The Upper House of the Parliament also unanimously demanded of the government to make all possible efforts to bring about revolutionary changes in the living standards of her family, because her family was living below the poverty line in a single room house in Karachi.

Senator Raza Rabbani, while speaking on a point of order, sought permission to present a resolution to pay glowing tribute to the national flag hoister at Dhaka for her showing excellence in the field of sport.

Chairman Farooq H Naek suspended the rules of business and permitted Raza Rabbani to move the resolution. Speaking on the occasion, Raza Rabbani said that wining of gold medal by a daughter was welcoming, but she belonged too poor to keep gold medal at her house. “So immediate efforts were need of the time for improving her living standard along with provision of job and professional training to better her sport” he observed.

He moved the resolution which said that the Seante recommended the outstanding performance of a Pakistani athlete namely Ms. Naseem Hameed in the 11th South Asian Games held at Dhaka. Naseem Hameed the fastest woman of South Asia, a tremendous achievement, but what required praise, support and appreciation were the fact that she hailed from a family living below the poverty line.

“Attaining such heights in a field of support which requires training and good health in her particular circumstances where in her entire family resides in one room in Karachi highly commendable. This also reflects the fat that the working classes of Pakistani when determined can scale insurmountable heights” the resolution stated.

It further said that in the prevailing circumstances the poor daughter of Pakistan had done the nation proud so the Senate called upon the Federal Government to take measures including provision of job to her in any autonomous, semi-autonomous body or corporation like PIA etc, training programe for showing potential for further such wins if properly trained, bestow a civil award along with a patch of land (plot).

Leader of the Opposition Senator Wasim Sajjad demanded of the government to set up a fund to encourage players. He said that government should restrict its interference in selection of players and entire activity of selection be executed by selection committees freely and independently.

It will be great source of inspiration and encouragement of players for the future if government pays attention to resolution presented by Raza Rabbani and takes steps to encourage her” he added.

Senator Ishaque Dar said that government should make an announcement that every winning player would be honoured with prize as it would encourage other players too to demonstrate animal spirits in international tournaments and events.

At this Federal Minister for Science and Technology Azam Swati said that Naseem Hameed was national pride so he would provide maximum financial assistance in her professional training and other affairs. Meanwhile, Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP) is content with the performance of country’s athletes in the 11th South Asian Games and will give cash prizes and awards to medal winners, Secretary of the Athletics Federation of Pakistan (AFP), Khlaid Mehmood said on Wednesday.

KARACHI: Naseem Hameed after becoming the fastest sprinter of South Asia and winning a gold medal for Pakistan at the South Asian Games, received a very warm welcome here at the Jinnah International Airport on Thursday.

Present on the occasion were hundreds of people including members of her family, relatives, residents of her area, minister for sports Sindh, officials of the Pakistan Army athletics and members of the Federation of Pakistan Athletics Association.

In an exclusive talk with Geo News at the airport, Naseem said that she has come after fulfilling all her expectations with which she had gone to Dhaka.

She said that Allah blessed her with more than she expected and her parents’ prayers and encouragement brought her to this place.

Naseem said that she would work hard with further zeal and spirit in future.

She said that she is more glad to earn her country Pakistan and her township Korangi a great name.

The fastest woman of South Asia said that her coaches have highly cooperated with her due to which she got success.

From the airport, Naseem has reached the Governor House where a ceremony has been arranged in her honour.

President Asif Ali Zardari has congratulated Naseem Hameed and said that she is a role model for Pakistani women and her success reflects the government policies to uplift the women of the country.

ISLAMABAD, Feb 11 (APP): President Asif Ali Zardari on Thursday felicitated Naseem Hamid on becoming fastest woman of the region on winning 100-metre sprint gold medal at South Asian Games. President Zardari in his message said Naseem Hamid had brought laurels to the country with her relentless pursuit to achieve a prominent position among the sportswomen from SAARC region.
The President said Naseem’s success was a testament to the government’s policies for the emancipation of women in all fields of life.
He hoped that Naseem would act as a role model for other women of the country to achieve their goals with determination.
The 22-year-old from Karachi created history by clocking 11.81 seconds, 0.12 seconds ahead of Sri Lanka’s Pramila Priyadarshani, to bag her first gold medal in South Asian Games held in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

QUETTA: Quetta’s neglected hero Nematullah Khan, who clinched gold medal in 11th South Asian Games, is looking for government support, Geo News reported Friday.

Khan, a resident of Quetta’s Kakar Colony, belongs to a very poor family; but, he grabbed gold medal in 54-kg weight category—the only medal in six-member team participating in the boxing event.

Nemat’s father is a labourer having a family with seven sons and four daughters.

The national hero started boxing in 2004 from a local club here with Salahud Din as his coach. The Coach termed his performance as promising.

Din said the boxer started his sport career from his club, then he moved to national camp, adding he had no money to buy ticket for Karachi.

The hero Nemat works on contract in Wapda to earn 7000 rupees monthly.

President appoints Naseem, Sara sports ambassadors

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari on Friday appointed gold-winning Pakistan women athletes Naseem Hameed and Sara Nasir sports ambassadors to honour their extraordinary success.

He also announced a cash award of one million rupees to each of them and Rs200,000 each to other gold winning players.

The 22-year-old Naseem became South Asia's fastest woman by winning the 100-metre in the South Asian Federation Games (SAF) in Dhaka, while Sara returned with a gold medal in karate.

Zardari received the athletes in Islamabad and praised their hard work which brought laurels to the country.

Present also on the occasion were federal minister for sports Ijaz Jakhrani, chairman Pakistan Olympic Association Lt Gen (R) Arif Hasan and other officials.

Congratulating both female athletes, the president said that they have made the name of Pakistan all over the world for which the entire nation is proud of them.

President Zardari also announced a cash award of Rs100,000 each for the coaches of the players .

He directed the sports ministry to make arrangements for foreign training of all these winners of gold medals.

I hate zardari, but I will salut him if he really gives some reward to poor players who won the gold medal like Nematullah Khan, who won the gold medal in boxing.
