well, some nations would rather spend on buying weapons and sending useless satellites into earth orbit than devote resources to such a mission.

it would be a simple affair, i would say... using two airships to go into mars atmosphere, land on the two ice-caps, collect ice cores of the said length and ascend back to carrier craft in mars orbit.

If aliens turn out to look like Indians I will be severely disappointed.

Alien life will, in the positive side, unite humans and hopefully put an end to all religion. The negative flip of that would be some of these religious people trying to spread their version of the word of god to these aliens too.
