NASA reveals strange, bomberlike planes of 2025

Given that we are unlikely to get past 2012, perhaps it's churlish to even think of what 2025 might look like.

However, the indelible optimists at NASA have revealed images of commercial aircraft designs that might well take to the air, should 2025 actually materialize.

It seems that in the darker parts of 2010, NASA gave Lockheed Martin, Boeing, and Northrop Brumman money to ponder what improvements might be made to our current aerial cattle carriers.
The initial designs, published on NASA's own site, will make some drool and a few, perhaps, shiver.

NASA - A First Look at Flight in 2025

For at least two of them make me think of, well, war--specifically, military aircraft--while the third seems plain peculiar.

Life might, indeed, be very peculiar by the time 2025 comes along.
And perhaps I am suffering the after-effects of mind-altering 2005 Amista syrah. But perhaps someone else might see in, for example, the Boeing design, a rather touching homage to the Stealth Bomber?
Then there's the design from Northrop Grumman. Please forgive me in advance (a phrase that does, actually, sometimes work for me), but doesn't it look just a little as if someone took two B-52 bombers and slapped them together?
Finally, the Lockheed design. This, perhaps, seems the most conventional of the three, at least from the angle in which it is presented.
Yet again, as someone who merely looks at planes at airports as they arrive late, I'm reminded just a little, by that engine at the back, of the Lockheed Tri-Star--which, oh, never moved me to paroxysms of joy.
I would naturally love to hear from those with a more intimate knowledge of both aircraft design and future times. Do these designs move? Or are they mere flights of fancy?

NASA unveils extraordinary ideas for the aircraft of 2025

LONDON (PTI): In what may become the face of modern aviation, NASA has unveiled three concept designs for quiet, energy efficient aircraft which it says could be ready for flight as soon as 2025.

Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman and Boeing came up with the designs and all the three companies won a contract from the U.S. space agency to research, develop and test their concepts in 2011, the ‘Daily Mail’ reported.

The designs came about after NASA revealed it was aiming to develop a line of “Super Planes” that are faster, larger, quieter - and burn fuel more efficiently and cleanly than their present counterparts.

Criteria set by NASA meant that each design had to fly up to 85 per cent of the speed of sound, cover a range of about 7,000 miles and carry between 50,000 and 100,000 of payload; either cargo or passengers.

Now, each of the three companies will spend the rest of this year exploring, testing and simulating their designs in the hope that NASA will choose it for development.

A spokesman from technology and innovation website ‘Fast Company’ was quoted as telling the ‘Huffington Post’, “Given how long it usually takes to craft an aircraft from scratch, and bearing in mind how many technical hitches the revolutionary Boeing 787 Dreamliner has suffered, these are the sorts of aircraft that these three firms are probably beginning to design for real right about now.”

Impressive designs.i wonder how far the world will fetch the technological advancements

The world is un-balance and funny isn't it ,in some parts of the world you see such gigantic technological wonders and in other part people still finding hard to get one time meal.

Loji karlo baat, isiko to jindagi kehte hain jee. agar hum gali ke dada dadee se iske bare me puuch taach kare to pata chal jawe ki ye sab hamara hi paisa hai jo firangi wala leke bhaga yaha se

Geez judging from the title I thought that the space bombers were ready.

Cute sentence structure. Let me guess, you blog frequently?

Not quite sure how you came to the conclusion that these designs were somehow destined to drop bombs on peace-loving villagers everywhere. First, the exposed engines give them all the radar cross-section of a Boeing 747. Secondly, flying wings have been recognized for decades as being the most efficient design, but their natural instability caused problems until the advent of computers.

You see "death from above" apparently. I see efficient cargo and passenger planes.

To the thread starter .. what makes you say we are unlikly to get passed 2012 ? as we have already come so far .

American innovation is really going dead looking at the designs -

Ah those were the days industrial revolution .... when ppl build stuff like titanic .... and empire state building and , new york statue of liberty ....

Ambition and desire , and landing on moon wow now that was something ...

Now ...

Taking 70's bomber design and changing color form black to white and calling it something new :disagree:
