The theatrics surrounding the pass-the-parcel political drama in Delhi is unlikely to faze the man who is to be the referee. For, lt governor Najeeb Jung is a theatrewallah himself, a Shakesoc enthusiast from St Stephen's College, Delhi.

It was a passion he revived after four decades when he acted in an Indian People's Theatre Association's Anarkali-Akbar-Salim two years ago. He played the rather villainous Akbar to a lovelorn Anarkali. Now will he play the philosopher-emperor Akbar to resolve the political tangle in Delhi?

TOI met some who have known him for long to get an assessment. Theatre director and IPTA secretary Aziz Quraishi's links with Jung go back to their childhood in Old Delhi. Jung is quintessentially Purani Dilli, his roots lying in Daryaganj while Quraishi belongs to Matia Mahal.

"He used to come to watch our plays and I planned to do a new take on Anarkali. His physique, appearance and style were just right for Akbar's role. When I asked, he said 'why not?'" says Quraishi.
