Hyderabad:

AIMIM President Asaduddin Owaisi on Saturday said that the "myth" of 40 lakh illegal migrants in Assam claimed by Home Minister Amit Shah had been busted, with the updated final National Register For Citizens list excluding only 19 lakh.

"First of all, it is for the Home Minister to clarify. Because Mr Amit Shah had made a speech in which he said there are 40 lakh intruders in Assam. I want to know from him...does he still stand by his
comment?" he said.

He claimed that late Union Home Minister Indrajit Gupta had put the number in 1997 to be 40 lakh, while former Minister of State for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal had stated the number of illegal migrants to be 50 lakh.

"Now this myth of illegal migrants has been busted. That is why you see the BJP is now complaining about National Register of Citizens," he said.

Mr Owaisi said he had spoken to many people in Assam, who cited instances of children names not finding a place in the list, though the names of their parents were in it.

"If the foreigners tribunal acts in a judicious way, this number will further come down. However, 19 lakh is a huge number," Mr Owaisi said.

He condemned the alleged comments of BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma in Assam that the party was not happy with the final NRC and would bring in a legislation on the matter.

"This is a Supreme Court monitored process. Why are you casting aspersions on Supreme Court?" he asked.

Mr Owaisi said the BJP should learn a lesson from the Assam experience and stop asking for NRC throughout the country "in terms of Hindus and Muslims".

What Amit Shah, the late Indrajit Gupta and Mr Jaiswal said on the number illegal migrants had turned out to be wrong, he said.

The updated final NRC, which validates bonafide Indian citizens of Assam, was released in that state on Saturday, with the authority conducting the exercise shutting out the citizenship claims of over 19 lakh applicants.

Asaduddin Owaisi is a man of high intellect. Never mess around with him. Destroying opponents on TV debates is second nature for him.

well bangladesh should get ready for these peoples..20 lac is nt a small number

Those people will only become a part of Bangladesh (citizens) if the proportionate land they live on is ceded to Bangladesh. Not before, and while even the last Bangladeshi stands...
Well good luck standing to India on this
Myanmur refugees are stuck in bangladesh ..these for sure will be deported and happily accepted by your PM

Next there is a register for foreigners in hyderabad and they would make awasi illegal.

Well Chaiwala is making a hug bet that raising these bets in Kashmir, Assam and NRC nationwide in general is going to pay off without a hitch. It won't. Just you watch.

Any time you make moves like this, countries like the US can leverage these as 'human rights' issues and use these as pressure points against chaiwala. Those will become a lot more expensive and burdensome against India.

All is hunky dory between the US and India now, but just wait till things turn just a little sour...all the H1B's will be back to India in a flash and the backoffice companies will be running to New Delhi begging Chaiwala to change tactics.
