Mystery as ‘GHOST ISLAND’ appears in frozen lake without warning

A BORDER guard was left stunned after discovering a “new island” appear out of a frozen lake – despite no previous warning.
Finland’s Lapland Border Patrol tweeted a picture of the strange phenomenon last week.
The image showed what appeared to be a huge land mass rising out of the ice sheets.
To make it even more bizarre, there was no sight or sound of any volcanic activity in the area that might explain the sudden appearance of new rock formations.
“A ghost island, weird,” one wrote.
Another commented: “Awesome picture.”
And a third added: “This is seriously weird.”
But others – such as YouTube channel DAHBOO77 – pointed out it was simply a mirage.
The sight of an “island” is caused when light passes through atmospheric layers to cause mirage-like effects along the horizon.
It reflects and refracts distant landscapes in confusing ways.
And it is not the first time mirages have sent the internet into meltdown.
What seemed to be a ghostly block of apartments were spotting rising above the sea in China in 2018.
A year earlier, a strange “ghost sea” appeared in a barren desert 1,550 miles away from the nearest ocean.
