AHMEDABAD: A Muslim woman was allegedly forced to remove her headscarf at an event attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Gujarat today. Shaharban Saidsalavi was a member of a delegation from Kerala who attended the event held in Gandhinagar, which was meant to honour women achievers on the occasion of the International Women's Day. For a practising Muslim woman, hijab or headscarf is not only considered a matter of modesty, but also an intricate part of religious observation.

Noorbinal Rashid, a member of Kerala Women's Commission Member said Ms Saidsalavi, a panchayat president, was asked to remove her headscarf by the security persons at the venue. It was taken away for the entire duration of the event, which was attended by nearly 6,000 people.

Ms Saidsalavi, who has been a local body leader for over 20 years, had been invited to the function as her panchayat in Wayanand for its contribution in making the area open defecation free.

"She was given her headscarf after an hour when other members from the delegation intervened," said Yahy Khan, who had been informed about the matter from Kerala's 100-odd member delegation who had accompanied Ms Saidsalavi.

"This is an insult and unacceptable. On Women's Day, this is what is happening to a woman from a minority community," Ms Rashid added.

Calling it a violation of human rights, Kerala Women's Commission has demanded action against the security officer concerned. But the seniormost police officer of the district has denied the allegations.

"The woman's face was covered and it had to be removed to check her identity. This was done in the presence of the lady co-ordinator", said Virendra Yadav, Superintendent of Police, Gandhinagar.

NDTV has been unable to contact Ms Saidsalavi.

What Muslim woman rights? Security is more important.

"The woman's face was covered and it had to be removed to check her identity. This was done in the presence of the lady co-ordinator", said Virendra Yadav, Superintendent of Police, Gandhinagar

This is the norm is every country of the world, even in Muslim countries.

Selective quoting haan...

"She was given her headscarf after an hour when other members from the delegation intervened," said Yahy Khan

This doesn't look like a norm in any country.

I think I d rather believe what the Superintendent of Police has to say, than some random Yahy Khan with an obvious chip on his shoulder.

This perpetual victim mentality has to end.

I would rather the believe the woman herself than the person who was responsible for this at the first place.

The Muslim sarpanch alleged that she was stopped because she was wearing a black 'mafta' or headscarf.

"The police said the black mafta will not be allowed into the hall," alleged Sheherbanath, president of the Muppainad gram panchayat in Wayanad, Kerala. "I was forced to remove the headscarf and hand it over to the security personnel at the venue. I attended the function without the mafta."

Sheherbanath, who is a member of the IUML, said the police later returned the headscarf after strong protests from the Kerala delegation. The panchayat president was a part of the 100-member delegation from Kerala that had gone to Gandhinagar to attend the Swachh Shakti programme, jointly organized by Gujarat and central government.

In a Facebook post, Kayakkodi panchayat president Aswathi K T, who also attended the programme, said: "We registered a strong protest when the police refused to let Sheherbanath in wearing the black headscarf. We took up the issue with the SP and finally the headscarf was returned.

Anyways this comes as no surprise to me. You only believe what you want to overlooking the facts since that fits in your narrative. So carry on.

I generally take NDTV reports with a ton of salt because of their obvious bias against modi and BJP

They could not contact the lady. Some random person says that scarf was not given for over one hour. the SP says that yes scarf was removed for securty purpose which is an acceptable practice.

NDTV as is there record is portraying it as operession of woman when it is just a normal security check

So allowing burqa clads in public event attended by PM will showcase the concern for muslim women ?
Such idiot mentality deserves to live in a cave.

That's her choice of dressing, you don't decide what she has to wear in a public event attended by PM.

the headscarf was removed for security reasons.
That's done everywhere but the point is not returning it after vetting.

Yes I understand that you only believe in satyavijayi and other Hindutva propaganda sites but it's not just NDTV which reported it..

The outlook link clearly says that the women were allowed to attend event with their hijabs

In a televised audio byte given to some new channels in Kerala, Muppanad Panchayat president, Shaharbhan, alleged that the security personnel first prevented her and two other women from attending the function as they were wearing black 'hijabs', part of their religious veil.

Shaharbhan said that while she removed her veil to enter the venue, two other representatives from Cherkulam and Trikaripur panchayats in Kasaragod district refused to attend the function without their traditional head scarfs, she claimed.

After some Swachh Bharat Mission officials from Kerala intervened, the women were allowed to wear their traditional attire.
