I know people, in equal part almost, who will or will not abstain from consuming meat (*beef, specifically)

I know Tam - Brahms (Tamil brahmins), for instance, who eat it, it all depends on a variety of circumstances.. I, along with many of my lot love us some occasional steak or roast, but we're mindful of where we're at, who we're with.

You don't know what you are talking about. Muslims can eat Kosher, especially from Orthodox Jews. We don't care if Jews eat Halal or not. Kosher meat has even more restrictions than Halal meat. In America, Kosher foods have the K symbol on them and Kosher food industry is far bigger than Halal food. It is mainstream.

I think the Union of Orthodox Jews puts a U label on food items in the supermarket because they may have more restrictions. You can even find items with both K and U stamps. It tells us there are no pork products in those foods.
