THE Kargil Heights were strategically critical and the most coveted piece of real estate on the Kashmir border.
The Heights were on the Pakistani side of the ceasefire line since 1949. The 11th Gorkha Rifles quietly occupied them for the third time in Dec. 1971. General Musharraf wrested them back.
They had thrown in everything they had but the Pakistanis just could not be dislodged. Dozens of bodies were arriving at Indian homes every day for months, longer than any India/Pakistan war. There was uproar throughout the country. The Indians simply hated the guts of Gen Musharraf.
How the Kargil Heights were gifted back to them is another pathetic story.
Defeat was looming ahead for the Indians on another front: their proxy war supporting the Tamils. Pakistan was arming and supporting the Sri Lankans. Gen Musharraf had probably put the finishing touches for their final humiliation when he was returning from Colombo on that fateful 12th day of Oct 1999. They would have loved to lay their hands on this most-hated Pakistani COAS.
Little did they know how close they were to getting their man when Nawaz Sharif ordered: “Gen Musharraf’s aircraft must not be allowed to land at ‘any airport in Pakistan’ …”. The fuel-starved airliner was about to land at Karachi. The one and only airport outside Pakistan within its reach was Ahmadabad (India) and that is where the chief of the Pakistan Army would be had the order been followed. This ‘weird order’ might have passed as inadvertent. But seeing today’s vicious hatred emanating from analysts and anchors of the Raiwind variety, it seems that our dedicated
revenge-seekers, with their ‘primitive wisdom’, might have very well decided that handing over our ‘airborne’ COAS to the Indians would be good riddance: … a ‘high treason’ act for sure!
This one single ‘thoughtless order’ provided the trigger to all our present woes and changed the course of Pakistan’s history. Why are we keeping a lid over it?
