THE Kargil Heights were strategically critical and the most coveted piece of real estate on the Kashmir border.

The Heights were on the Pakistani side of the ceasefire line since 1949. The 11th Gorkha Rifles quietly occupied them for the third time in Dec. 1971. General Musharraf wrested them back.

They had thrown in everything they had but the Pakistanis just could not be dislodged. Dozens of bodies were arriving at Indian homes every day for months, longer than any India/Pakistan war. There was uproar throughout the country. The Indians simply hated the guts of Gen Musharraf.

How the Kargil Heights were gifted back to them is another pathetic story.

Defeat was looming ahead for the Indians on another front: their proxy war supporting the Tamils. Pakistan was arming and supporting the Sri Lankans. Gen Musharraf had probably put the finishing touches for their final humiliation when he was returning from Colombo on that fateful 12th day of Oct 1999. They would have loved to lay their hands on this most-hated Pakistani COAS.

Little did they know how close they were to getting their man when Nawaz Sharif ordered: “Gen Musharraf’s aircraft must not be allowed to land at ‘any airport in Pakistan’ …”. The fuel-starved airliner was about to land at Karachi. The one and only airport outside Pakistan within its reach was Ahmadabad (India) and that is where the chief of the Pakistan Army would be had the order been followed. This ‘weird order’ might have passed as inadvertent. But seeing today’s vicious hatred emanating from analysts and anchors of the Raiwind variety, it seems that our dedicated

revenge-seekers, with their ‘primitive wisdom’, might have very well decided that handing over our ‘airborne’ COAS to the Indians would be good riddance: … a ‘high treason’ act for sure!

This one single ‘thoughtless order’ provided the trigger to all our present woes and changed the course of Pakistan’s history. Why are we keeping a lid over it?

Even without the Kargil war, I think, the Musharraf trial is not the right direction for Pakistan.

Democracy would be strengthened by deliverance of good civic order, not by hounding the ghosts of the past.

I happened to live and work in KSA for about 2 years (post Kargil), and i had met many Indians... all sort, and one of them was one Indian Muslim (secular type), who's family was in army and was sent on front lines by hindus (he termed it as human shield).
Now this guy reported that there was huge panic in Dehli, after planes loaded with bodies started to arrive and there was not enough arrangements to bring bodies back from front lines.
In short, hindus had lost it morally ........

Nawaz Sharif advised the pilot to go to India. I'm not ready to believe that there was no backdoor diplomacy, where Sharif may had promised to deliver the culprit (in his POV).
IMO, Pak army did the right thing saving their CnC, while Musharraf should have hanged all PML-N stalwarts, instead of letting them live.
Conspiring with enemy state is treason of high level and all PML-N should be charged with it.

I was in Delhi at that time. There was only determination to kick the "rats" out.

And kick them out we did.

As a Pakistani commentator mentioned, Musharraf danced Bhangra after Shariff saved his behind by going to USA and asking Clinton to save him.

He changed the tune in a few days.

Sad to see a Pakistan army Captain trying to act patriotic by spreading retarded propaganda.

Apparently peaks gained in wartime are quietly occupied for the dear captain, while occupying empty posts is wresting back.

Gifted back... are the Pakistanis not taught any lessons on how not to lose a war?, That would probably explain repeated failures of Pak army, failure to acknowledge its short comings and dumping its incompetence on politicians/.

It is amazing they try to deny something that happened in full view of the world media and was televised live.

Think what they would do to their history.

ISLAMABAD: Besides an astounding number of 317 personnel of the Punjab Elite Force who still provide VVIP security to Nawaz Sharif, Shahbaz Sharif and family, 444 jawans of the Lahore Police Security Division, Punjab Constabulary and the Lahore District Police continue to guard the former rulers of Punjab at their private residences in Raiwind, Model Town and the Gulberg areas of Lahore.

According to the break-up of 761 policemen who continue to provide VVIP security to the Sharifs in Lahore at the expense of the taxpayers’ money, 317 belong to the Punjab Elite Force, 302 are from the Lahore Police Security Division, 108 personnel belong to the Punjab Constabulary while 34 others are from the Lahore District Police.

The Sharif brothers — Nawaz and Shahbaz Sharif — are not only enjoying an extraordinary security ring of 761 policemen from four different branches of the Punjab Police against their entitlement of 12 and eight Police personnel each being a former prime minister and a former chief minister respectively, their security staff is also using 54 official vehicles of different branches of the Punjab Police.

According to a former Inspector General of the Punjab Police who requested to remain anonymous, the estimated monthly salary budget of 761 policemen performing security duties of the Sharifs is about Rs20 million (Rs19025000 to be exact). “The approximate monthly salary budget of 317 Punjab Elite Force personnel is around Rs8 million (Rs7925000 to be exact). The estimated salary budget of 302 personnel of the Lahore Police Security Division is around Rs7.5 million (Rs7550000 to be exact). The rough salary budget of 108 personnel of the Punjab Constabulary per month is about Rs2.7 million while another Rs0.85 million are being paid to 34 personnel of Lahore District Police every month who continue to perform security duties at the private residence of Sharifs in Lahore”, the former IG Punjab added.

Approached for comments, a senior official of the Punjab Police conceded that around 1200 Punjab Police personnel were performing the security duties of Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif due to serious security threats they had been facing. He added that the four Lahore residences where 761 policemen had been deployed to address the security concerns of the Sharif family included the Jati Umra Farm House of Nawaz Sharif in Raiwind, 196-H Block residence of Mian Shahbaz Sharif in Model Town, 155-K Block residence of Hamza Shahbaz in Model Town and 61-C Block residence of Mrs Tehmina Shahbaz Sharif in the Gulberg area of Lahore.

However, the senior police official claimed that following the dissolution of the Punjab government last month, almost 50 percent security staff was withdrawn by the former Inspector General of the Punjab Police, Khan Baig. To another query, the official said the security staff of the Sharif brothers as well as their family members had been using 62 police vehicles before the dissolution of the provincial government. Although Khan Baig had ordered withdrawal of 50 per cent vehicles, the security staff of the Sharif duo has returned only eight of them while 54 police vehicles are still being used by them.

Approached for comments, Nabeela Ghazanfar, the Punjab Police spokesperson, told The News that the former prime minister and the former chief minister and their family members were being provided extraordinary security keeping in view threats to them. When told that a former prime minister is entitled to a security cordon of only 12 people while a former chief minister is entitled to a security ring of only eight people whereas the Sharifs are being protected by a staggering number of 761 policemen, Nabeela said the issue has already been brought into the notice of the newly appointed IG Punjab, Aftab Sultan. “The message from the IG is that he is unaware of the exact entitlement of a former premier and a former chief minister as far as the number of policemen they can keep is concerned. He will consult the Election Commission of Pakistan on the issue in a day or so to ascertain if the Sharif family members were being provided more than the authorized security staff.”

Approached for comments, Director General Public Relations (DGPR) Punjab Amjad Hussain Bhatti said the caretaker Chief Minister Najam Sethi is fully aware of the issue of extraordinary security protocol being provided to the Sharifs unlike the other prime ministers and the chief ministers living in the provincial metropolis and that he would be taking a decision very soon.

To another query, Bhatti agreed that the extraordinary security protocol being extended to the PML-N leadership was giving an impression as if the Sharifs would again stage a comeback following the upcoming general elections. But he added in the same breath that protecting the heads of all the major political parties and their immediate family members was the responsibility of the government, although it was costing the national exchequer heavily.

This was the time when no portfolio was associated. God knows what is the state now when three houses in Lahore have been declared CM house and one house as PM house.

Then I think let the God knowing about it until something breaks on Media. Btw I am not a big fan of Mr.Amir Mir, something similar like the batmannow. If something pops up, do feel free to share with all of us. But I really couldn't get the point in running off to google in response to everything. Oh I forgot "reseach and development".... :)

LOL, just wondering how many times has Mushy visited India after he retired, we could have had him if we wanted him so bad....the army captain is BSing.

and LOL at the Kargil BS, occupying vacated posts is bravado?.
