Musharraf govt involved in BBs death, says Wajid Shamsul Hassan
By Fahad Faruqui
LONDON: Former Pakistan High Commissioner to London, and top favourite for the same post again, Wajid Shamsul Hassan has said that the Musharraf government was involved and not just negligent in Benazir Bhuttos death, something that can be deduced from the fact that evidence was washed off after both the attacks in Karachi and Rawalpindi.
Hasan was part of a panel discussion organized by the Royal Commonwealth Society on Wednesday to deliberate Pakistan in Crisis: what role for the commonwealth? He passionately spoke against Musharraf and held him culpable for Bhuttos death, pointing out that in his opinion, Musharraf had strong hatred against Bhutto, which was obvious from his book: In the Line of Fire. He also recalled that Benazir Bhutto was informed of the death threats by the Musharraf-led administration but it didnt budge an inch when she wrote back providing three names of those who wanted her dead.
Robert Fisk, the journalist, said that Pakistan was a corrupt country. With regards to Bhuttos untimely death, Fisk deduced a logical conclusion by asking some questions: Who didnt want her to come to Pakistan? Who tried to stop her from coming to Pakistan? And, who held her in house arrest? The answers of the aforementioned questions would lead you to who killed Benazir Bhutto, he said.
PMLN stalwart Syed Ghaus Ali Shah agreed with Hasan. Benazir was a threat to Musharraf because he was on a weak wicket, said Shah. Shah has been living in self-exile, in London, since Musharraf ousted Mian Nawaz Sharif. Shah, the former Defence Minister in Sharifs cabinet, made it a point to tell a tale about Musharraf. Many who are here today dont know what Musharraf is. He has served under me and I saw him throw a prime minister with two-thirds majority. He is full of ambition.
Lord Nazir Ahmed of Rotherhams thoughts were aligned with the majority view. He picked on how Interior Ministry spokesman Javed Iqbal Cheema said that Bhutto died because of hitting the lever of the sunroof and then held Baitullah Masood responsible for her death. He inquired why nobody from the culprit group was arrested. He also said that Scotland Yard couldnt do anything in the given situation. Scotland Yard was given a political task, said the Honable Lord. There was no forensic evidence left for them to investigate, he added.
