Pakistan court allows ex-president Musharraf to leave country

AFP | Jun 12, 2014,

KARACHI: A court in Pakistan's southern city of Karachi on Thursday ordered the government to lift a travel ban on former military ruler Pervez Musharraf in 15 days' time, his lawyer said.

"The court has allowed our appeal and ordered to strike down Musharraf's name from the Exit Control List. The order will be executed after 15 days," said Farogh Naseem.

The delayed execution of the order "will give time to the government to appeal in a superior court if they so desire," he added.

Musharraf, 70, flew to Karachi in April to undergo medical tests. He has said he wants the travel ban lifted so he can visit his sick mother in Dubai, but many in Pakistan see it as a ruse to flee the country and avoid the litany of criminal cases against him dating back to his 1999-2008.

Musharraf was indicted for treason in March over his imposition of emergency rule in 2007 - a case seen as a test of civilian authority in a country long dominated by the military.

Musharraf travel curb to be lifted in 15 days: SHC
By Dawn.com
KARACHI: The Sindh High Court (SHC) on Thursday in a short order said that the name of former military ruler Pervez Musharraf be removed from the exit control list (ECL) after 15 days.

The ruling was issued by a two-judge bench of the SHC comprising Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Shahnawaz following the hearing of Musharraf's request for the removal of his name from the ECL.

The bench stated that parties opposing the ruling could approach the Supreme Court during the next 15 days, adding that Musharraf cannot leave the country during that period.

While talking to media representatives, Musharraf’s counsel Barrister Farogh Nasim said the federal government’s permission was not a requisite for Musharraf before travelling abroad.

Nasim said that the government could strike off Musharraf’s name from the ECL within 15 days, and within the said time limit the court’s ruling would be enforced.

i dont think the Gov will appeal against the decision... the better they settle this matter the better for Pakistan, we got more serious issues to deal with, besides the Gov will have an excuse now that the courts allowed him to travel a win win situation for all.....

Musharraf wants to travel abroad for medical checkup and to see his ailing mother.

KARACHI (Web Desk) – The Sindh High Court on Thursday ordered authorities to remove former military ruler Pervez Musharraf’s name from the Exit Control List (ECL).

A two-member high court bench comprising Justice Mohammad Ali Mazhar and Justice Shahnawaz announced the decision on Musharraf’s plea.

According to legal experts, the government can contest the decision within 15 days.

The government had barred Musharraf from going abroad and has placed his name on the ECL after he was charged in several cases including the 2007 assassination of former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and high treason.

Aside from the treason allegations, Musharraf also faces trial over the assassination of former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, the death of Baloch leader Nawab Akbar Bugti, a deadly raid on Lal Masjid and the detention of judges.
