Under pressure to quit, Mush meets Benazir

Ishtiaq Ali Mehkri

Karachi: Pakistan’s politics took a curious turn on Friday as president Pervez Musharraf met former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in Abu Dhabi.
There were reports of a deal being struck between Musharraf and Bhutto, on the preconditions of sacking the Shaukat Aziz government, holding of free and fair polls under a neutral caretaker administration, doffing of president’s uniform and his re-election for another term from the new legislature.

Besides, during his six-day long discussions with his top military aides in Rawalpindi after the reinstatement of the chief justice, Musharraf was advised to seek an “honourable exit”, The News quoted unnamed sources. Indications to this end came from powerful quarters in the federal capital and the army headquarters on Friday as Musharraf flew to UAE and Saudi Arabia in a move to mend fences with Bhutto and Nawaz Sharif.

There was a consensus in the presidential camp during the discussions that Musharraf was in such a situation that even former PM Benazir Bhutto’s political support could not bail him out, the sources said. “Musharraf is now at the dead end of the tunnel,” said sources. Musharraf ’s army spokesman Lt Gen Rashid Qureshi, however, denied reports of pressure on the president. But sources confirmed that Musharraf silently noticed observations of the army commanders asking him to ‘‘look forward for a honourable exit strategy’’.

Pakistan denies Musharraf-Benazir meeting

Islamabad, July 28 (IANS) Pakistan has denied reports of President Pervez Musharraf meeting with exiled former prime minister Benazir Bhutto in Abu Dhabi.

'The government has kept its door open for talks with anyone but no such meeting (between Musharraf and Benazir) has taken place,' Muhammad Ali Durrani, Pakistan's minister for information and broadcasting, said.

Media reports Friday said Musharraf held a meeting with Bhutto in Abu Dhabi to clinch a deal to ensure his re-election and her return home from self-exile.

The reports also said that Bhutto had cancelled a parliamentary party meeting of her Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) in London to reach the UAE capital for the meeting.

According to the Associated Press of Pakistan, Durrani told a private TV channel that the prevailing situation demanded that the stakeholders sit together and evolve a joint strategy to meet the challenges.

To a question, the minister said that ruling Pakistan Muslim League (PML) has introduced a different political culture in the country by keeping its doors open to discuss national issues.

CNN IBN is also reporting that there might be a deal in the offing between Mushy and Benazir.

Either way, it goes to show, Musharraf is having troubles at home.

Such a deal would reaffirm the fact that Mush is more power hungry than any other Pakistani leader. He can deal with anyone to remain in power no matter if it means to set aside billions of dollars of ML charges.

What would happen to Chaudhries?

What about Begum abida hussain and pir fakhar imam?

What about Patriots?

What about Aitzaz Ahsan and all those leaders who have been actively involved in removing musharraf?

how can musharef give her the prime minsters job i thought there has to be a vote 1st? or is this how democracy works in mushy land

There is going to be a vote. The speculation is that, with BB's personality and the recent controversies Mushy has suffered from, the PPP has an excellent chance of becoming the majority party in a "free and fair election"; hence BB's reported insistence on a neutral caretaker administration. The PML-Q will probably end up being the second largest party, which would mean that, with some twists and turns, BB would be elected PM.

Of course there is also the possibility that the PML-Q is elected as the largest party, in which case Mushy's man would probably get the job, and the PPP acts as the supporting cast, but that seems unlikely at this point.

A third scenario could be that that the PML-Q is elected the largest party, but Mushy still gives BB the option to become PM, in order to cement her support and put up a "popular elected face" to represent the government.

Politics, its dirty everywhere it is played

Aint that the truth...

What about the third term in office. A rule which mush introduced to keep the two out of Pakistani polictics. Will this master of U-turns withdraw it too like he has done on every other issue

This is all speculation, but if you are following the various editorials and op-ed pieces in the Pakistani press, JUI-F, PML-Q, MQM and PPP might amend the constitution to allow a third term. There is also speculation that BB becoming PM for the third time is one of the sticking points between Mushy and BB. Perhaps Mushy will exchange his uniform for an assurance that BB will give up aspirations to premiership for a third time. I hope that is the outcome, but only time will tell. There is still the possibility that PML-Q could end up winning a majority of seats.

You obviously don't understand politics too well. It's all about not being so rigid. The Taliban in all their rigidity did not last..neither will any other country that is not flexible enough. Being a master of U-turns is actually something that has made Pakistan avoid some nasty situations.

The Iranians in all their rigidity have managed to do some things only because they have oil. Without the oil, they really would be isolated.

Lahori understands politics real well.

He is a politician's son and his father is an elected representative!

If what you are implying were true, then dynastic rule would not have failed as miserably as it did. :)
