Mufti Shahabuddin Popalzai – a cleric from Masjid Qasim Khan in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa capital – hinted on Tuesday that eye witnesses’ accounts for moon sighting will be considered on Sunday, 28 Shaban and said he cannot promise for the same day Eid and Ramazan across the country.

Minister for Religious Affairs Sardar Yousuf however assured Mufti Popalzai that the Central Ruet-e-Hilal Committee would not make announcement of moon sighting until evidence from Peshawar are collected.

The minister chaired a meeting of Ulema (clerics) from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who informed him about their grievances with regards to the Ruet-e-Hilal Committee.

The minister assured them the government would address their grievances and said the government wants Eid and Ramazan to be celebrated on the same day across the country including KP.

Popalzai said the central committee holds no religious authority, adding that he would welcome any evidence of moon sighting even if a meeting for this purpose is not being held.

The influential cleric told Sardar Yousaf that Masjid Qasim Khan would be open to accepting evidence of moon sighting on the 28th of Shabaan, the month preceding Ramazan.

The mosque in Peshawar has been synonymous with the moon sighting dissent for decades.

If mullahs not agreed on one Eid / moon sighting make met department authorize to issue dates of Eid and Ramadan and any one else dares to challenge the decision trial him under anti terrorism or treason.

What Govt is waiting for? another Lal Masjid in making? Army Chief should exercises his powers to pressurize Govt to take action.

Because this stubbornness against celebrating Eid on the same day as the rest of the country is born out of political and idiotic regional agendas which have absolutely nothing to do with the actual lunar cycle or calender. Pakistan is nowhere near vast enough longitudinally (or latitudinally from Peshawar to Islamabad or Lahore) to have any differences in the lunar cycle whatsoever. The lunar cycle isn't magic, it is simple science just like the solar cycle. And just like the solar cycle, using simple mathematics, one can now tell exactly which date Eid is going to fall on 50 years in advance. It is exactly as claiming that KPK runs on a date ahead the rest of Pakistan, which not only is ludicrous but is also stupid to the Nth degree. Thus, given the disingenuous and deceitful practices of these purported mullahs it is the states responsibility to safeguard the populace's interests against them, which in this case would be declaring the correct day for Eid, as per religious obligations, and, just as importantly, insuring harmony amongst an already heterogeneous social and ethnic fabric. But alas, a Pakistani will rather listen to an illiterate mullah than the state.

These imbeciles have been playing Pakistanis off Pakistanis without any authority for decades.

ps: This is not to say that the state-appointed mullahs do any better a job. Those idiots on the other hand will skip or add a day of Ramzan just to enjoy another day's worth of feasting and spotlight. But at least they are not doing it out of any political interests.

There is no need state monitor the moon sighting issue. Govt's only responsibility is to make sure that people celebrate Eid in peaceful and harmonious environment.

Give this sighting responsibility to Tanzeem ul Madaris or whatever committees every sect has made. Let them sit together and decide whether they want to celebrate Eid on same day or different days.

Govt. is making herself a party in a non issue and losing her writ uselessly. Please save you respect. Today Popalzai tomorrow someone else, this difference of opinion will remain there like difference in prayer timings. Govt. must play big and colossal.
