ISLAMABAD:
The Mutthahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) announced on Saturday it will contest the upcoming general polls without a broader election alliance, except, perhaps, seat adjustments with some likeminded parties.
Addressing the media, MQM deputy convener and Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Dr Farooq Sattar said, “The MQM is an independent party with a comprehensive election manifesto and it will independently contest the elections”. However, he added the party is open to the option of seat adjustment with a likeminded party, if and when needed.
He said the MQM made an alliance with the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) with the agenda of war against terrorism and extremism, strengthening democracy, economic stability and promoting the reconciliatory policy in the country.
“MQM has demonstrated itself as a mature political party and made its best contribution to achieve the targets,” he maintained.
Responding to a question, the MQM leader held the absence of community policing and local government system responsible for lawlessness in Karachi. “The menace of terrorism and extremism can be resolved if community policing and local government system is functioning well,” he noted.
He said that there was no target killing in Karachi between 2002 and 2008, because of vibrant and active community policing and local government systems.
“Terror outfits are behind the deteriorating law and order situation in Karachi with the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) being the most active one,” he maintained.
According to the MQM leader, a conspiracy is being hatched to destabilise the political and economic situation in Karachi.

Deputy Convenor of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Farooq Sattar has announced that his party would contest elections independently and without making electoral alliance with any party.

Sattar, who is Minister for Overseas Pakistanis and belongs to PPP’s ally party, said “MQM will go to the people with its own manifesto; however, seat adjustment can be made with any party.”

“We will ask from the government what MQM gained as a government ally. Over the last five years, we played our role as a friend, not a foe,” he said during a press conference here in Islamabad.

Addressing a press conference, he said the MQM has always contested elections independently with its own manifesto. However, he said that seat adjustment could be made with like minded parties.

The MQM leader said the party is in alliance with Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) on the basis of five points including fighting terrorism, strengthening the democracy, economic stability in the country, to make reconciliation policy successful and to stabilise the country.

“We played our role as a responsible political party to achieve these targets,” he maintained.

The minister said local problems including peace in Karachi could be resolved with local government system adding that the MQM has always supported LG system in the country.

Assailing the ruling party, he said impediment of the local body elections has favoured the Sindhi nationalists. “There is neither local government system nor a proper policing system in Karachi, which has fanned terrorism,” said Farooq Sattar.

Replying to a question, he said the banned outfits including Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) were responsible for destabilising peace in the metropolis.

Sattar said destabilising the financial hub of the country by killings political leaders and targeted killings on religious differences is in fact a conspiracy to destabilise Pakistan and its economy.

Meanwhile, after a long consultative meeting of the party’s Rabita (coordination) Committee, MQM chief Altaf Hussain was advised to not meet any government official until a conclusive decision is reached in this regard

Sattar said the MQM’s Coordination Committee has prepared a balance sheet realizing that its five-year performance is unsatisfactory.
