What's new

MQM Sold theirselves again.

Your having a laugh, the PM Pakistan is Yusuf Raza Gilani who was jailed for 5 years under Musharraf regime he will never allow the establisment to come back plus the MQM isn't merging with PPP its sharing the responsibilities in the coalition government the MQM is terified by the PPP anyways you know the crack down during the 90s can be repeated.

First of all you talk so negativly about the establishment. If they are so negative then why was Zulifikar Ali Bhutto part of the establishment with Field Marshall Ayub Khan, and I consider him the founding father of the modern establishment which came to power in 1971 till today. Its funny because the same establishment he was once a part of killed him.
As far as MQM is concerned. The Pir of London Sir Altaf Bhai will go with what ever party is going to give him the most money. The MQM is a small and regional party and they can only survive if they are supported by big parties such as the PPP or the PML's.

A goodwill gesture from where?

IRFAN BUKHARI

ISLAMABAD - Very close aides of President Pervez Musharraf asked MQM to withdraw its PM candidate in a bid to woo Zardari to adopt a soft stance towards President, TheNation learnt reliably here on Saturday.
The sources within PML-Q disclosed that MQM leadership had been asked by a very close associate of President Musharraf and a former head of a spy agency to withdraw its PM candidate contesting against the PPP nominee.
“In the meeting between PML-Q and MQM, the later told the former that the party had been convinced by the presidential camp to do so,” the source disclosed, adding that the unprecedented attempt by the presidential camp to bring MQM and PPP close was meant to create a soft corner in the heart of angry kingmaker Zardari.
The source said that according to presidential camp the inclusion of MQM in the coalition government could create a confrontation within quadrangular alliance, as the PML-N has a very strict stance towards MQM particularly after May 12 bloodbath in Karachi.
PML-Q leader claimed that the withdrawal of cases against Zardari had the same objective to woo Zardari to shed anti-Musharraf stance and get friendly towards him. “Presidential camp at every cost wants to create fissures between Zardari and Nawaz,” he maintained.
The source said, “If MQM shares power in the centre and succeeds in getting portfolios, it would annoy PML-N and the hawks within N-League would start exerting pressure on Mian Nawaz Sharif to take the issue with Zardari that could create a deadlock within an easygoing alliance”.
He claimed that PML-N in its All Parties Conference at London last July had vowed not to compromise with MQM in any condition. “If the quadrangular alliance accepts MQM in power-sharing, then PML-N would have to bear extreme pressure also from APDM that is currently supporting Mian Nawaz Sharif and his policies,” he added. He noted that ANP, the coalition partner of PPP, would also be caught in trouble over the inclusion of MQM in the alliance, as the Pakhtoons were not ready to bury the hatchet with Muttahida.
“On the other hand, PPP Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari shook hands with MQM to foil the possible move of disgruntled Makhdoom Amin Fahim to split the party in Sindh in retaliation over the nomination of any other candidate for PM slot”, the source said, adding that Zardari had closed Fahim’s doors to make a coalition government with PML-Q and MQM with his loyalists in his stronghold Sindh.
Another well-informed source within joint opposition while telling the whole story that how did MQM shake hands with PPP said that two close aides of President Pervez Musharraf on Friday evening phoned MQM Chief Altaf Hussain and asked him to withdraw Dr Farooq Sattar from premiership run. “When Altaf said that he would take decision after consulting PML-Q leadership as Sattar had been fielded not only by the Muttahida but also by the opposition parties jointly, he was told by the aides of President that they had convinced Chaudhrys and Q-League had agreed with the proposal,” the source said. He further told that actually PML-Q leadership was unaware of the development and knew only about it when Altaf Hussain had committed with Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari to withdraw Farooq Sattar from the run of premiership race.

MQM, PML-Q 'part ways'

MAQBOOL MALIK

ISLAMABAD - Efforts to cobble together a combined opposition in the National Assembly met serious blow on Saturday when former ruling party PML-Q and its major ally MQM parted ways.
The MQM withdrew nomination of Dr Farooq Sattar from race for the office of Prime Minister by announcing its unconditional support to PPP nominee Syed Yousaf Raza Gillani that left the Q-League in the lurch.
“The MQM leaders have taken us into confidence about their decision that they would join a coalition government in Sindh in larger interest of the people of the province,” PML-Q President Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain told a press conference at PML House.
“However, whether they sit in opposition or join the government in the centre, they would remain our friends,” he said.
He said the PML had informed the MQM that they did not want any numbers’ game in the Assembly and they would have no reservation if the MQM joins government in the interest of their own people.
To another question, Shujaat said the PML had no desire to join the treasury benches and all leaders of the party were unanimous to stay in the opposition.
“Numbers do not matter if you are in the opposition. The history reveals that only quality representation makes a difference,” he said, adding that only a handful of opposition MNAs had made a difference in the previous assemblies.
“In 70s, only 9 MNAs from the opposition had made a difference and former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto had to use force to pass a constitutional amendment,” PML-Q president added.
“We have decided to field our candidate as the political battle should not be left uncontested. Since consultation with some of our colleagues is yet to be made, the name of our candidate would be announced on Sunday,” Shujaat said, adding the party had taken the decision after consulting the PPP-S and PML-F.
Meanwhile, it was learnt that PML-Q has finalised the name of Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi as candidate for prime minister’s office.

MQM working for strengthening democracy and national reconciliation: Altaf

LONDON, March 22 (APP)-Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) leader Altaf Husain said Friday the decision to withdraw the candidature of Dr.Farooq Sattar from the post of prime minister was based on party’s conviction in strengthening democracy and national reconciliation.

Speaking at a function held in the north London district of Edgware to celebrate the 24th Foundation Day of the party, he said the party took the unconditional decision following telephone call from PPP Co-Chairman Asif Zardari who pleaded for peace and harmony in Sindh.

The MQM leader who spoke for an hour before an enthusiastic audience said Pakistan was passing through a critical phase of his history and it was imperative that all political forces unite to surmount these difficulties.

He spoke of the growing stature of MQM and said with each national elections, the party has strengthened its position both in the national and Sind assemblies.

Husain described MQM as a democratic and secular party of the middle class.

Speaking about the February 18 Parliamentary polls, he said MQM felicitated PPP,PML-N and ANP on their electoral successes and as well as PML-Q for attaining the highest number of total votes cast.

“MQM was the only political party that announced to support winning parties and promised not to create hurdles in the formation of the governments,” he said.

Adapting a conciliatory attitude, Hussain forgave all parties for the sake of national interest which he said had assumed unfriendly attitude towards MQM.

However, he warned that Pakistan could not progress unless the middle class was given its due share in the affairs of the country and hegemony of the feudal and the rich class was broken.

He claimed MQM was the only party that awarded tickets to its workers and not to the relatives of the party leadership unlike the other major parties. “This tendency of awarding tickets to near and dear ones must be broken if the country has to move forward and strengthen the democracy.”

Altaf Hussain said PML-N had criticised MQM but he holds no grudge against Nawaz Sharif and recognize the mandate won by his party.

In Parliament, he said MQM will support all the positive measures of the Government taken in the national interest but not lag behind in criticising if it steps out of line.

“We will criticise wrong policies in a positive manner but would not indulge in any rude behaviour or resort to desk thumping,” he said.

Lamenting that MQM has not been recognised at heart, he said it remains the only party which desire to break the status quo and rid the country of the unpleasant influence of the feudal and jagirdars while promoting middle class and honest people.

He promised that when in power MQM would retrieve the ill-gotten wealth stashed abroad and use it for the welfare of the people. Hussain said it was time for Pakistan to stand on its own feet and be counted rather than being on the crutches of international aid agencies and financial houses.

Senior members of the party leadership were also present on the occasion.

As lotaish as it may sound, I think the move by MQM has the backing of the President. If MQM is at odds with the government in Sind, Karachi's economy stands to get hurt (which in turn would have grave ramifications on the nation's economy).

I think it is a wise move to have Karachi on the same page politically so the existing stability prevails and sees the city through the crises.

Agree with you Sir. My compatriots, being emotional people, get carried away and ignore the ground realities of Pakistan. City of Karachi changed after the Sindhi/Mohajir confrontation during the Mumtaz Bhutto's chief ministership in the seventies and Mohajir/Pathan fracas in the early eighties. What was essentially a PPP stronghold is now home of the MQM.

MQM is an established poltical force in Sindh. They are the 4th largest party in the NA with 19 seats and the second largest party in Sindh with 51 seats. This makes them more important than ANP or MMA. It would be a folly to ignore them.

Without doubt, MQM started as a party of thugs and their actions of May 15, 2007 are contemptible. Also MQM is quintessentially a party of urban Sindh. However, politics is a game of numbers and no purpose is served deriding a party which has substantial following in the second largest province of Pakistan. We must not overlook the fact that only PPP and ML(Q) have won seats in all the 4 provinces. ML (N) won no seats in Baluchistan and Sindh and only 4 in the NWFP; making it essentially a party of the Punjab.

I personally have no special feelings for or against MQM. They are a secular party but nevertheless regional.

ONE SHOULD not critisize MQM of being trying to be part of new kings party, but yes they lost the moral victory which they got by sitting in the opposition, but they were simply dejected because of the unimplimentable ideas of MR, MUSHARAF and as MQM doesnt see any political future for MR, MUSHARAF + PML Q , MQM made right decesion , any way MQM wasnt bounded by any pact by musharaf and pml q,.

so, its illogical to blame MQM for its very recent actions , i guss they are not going sit on govt side !bt yes they are not looking for trouble in post musharaf pakistan.

they are doing, same thing, same theory which was taught by mushy?

Go for a real free and fair election take MQM out of the Govt. and then go for election, the so called mandate will change dramatically.

Give u an example there was one seat first it was won by PPP, then it was MQM, MQM candidate got 30,500+ , PPPP got 28,000+. Now this election MQM won again the seat and this time MQM guy 95000, and pppp guy got 30000+. LOL if that makes sense for anyone then please go for a HEAD EXAM.

And that MQM is none other then Farooq Sattar, and the case is still in court for this.

If you think that Karachi would be in anyone's hands aside from MQM then you are mistaken. I am sure some irregularities must have happened in the recent elections, but that does not take away from the massive and predominant support for the MQM in Karachi and other urban areas of Sind.

What about BB was she the pir of dubai.........The MQM as far as know are doing a great job in karachi....correct me if i am wrong,i am no expert on karachi.

Benazir the Pir of Dubai? Well I am not sure, she did live in Dubia but you must also remember she has houses all over the world, so I am guessing we can call her the International Pir. But lets not say anything bad about her she is dead and what she did went with her to her grave and she will answer before as like we all will.
Now as far as the MQM is concerned I stand by my statment that they are corrupt and have caused a lot of damage to the country and in particular Karachi. But at the same time they are responsible for turning around Karachi and trying to make it into a regional hub. Where they deserve credit I will give it to them and where they dont they should be condemmed.

PML-N does not want MQM at the Centre

Our Monitoring Desk

PML-N Quaid Nawaz Sharif has said that he has reservations about the MQM, reported a private TV channel on Sunday.
Talking to mediamen in Mansehra, Nawaz, while reacting to a question about the PPP’s talks with the MQM, said “We have certain reservations about the MQM”. He said the new government was being bestowed with problems rather than powers. “The President holds the powers of dissolving the elected assemblies and appointing service chiefs”. He further said that Pakistan’s sovereignty had been put on stake.
Answering another question, Nawaz said the coalition government would review all the policies including Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan's case. “Parliament will be empowered,” he said. Nawaz said it was nothing but a joke on the government’s part that sessions of the provincial assemblies had been called after two months.
According to another private TV channel, PML-N leader Ch Nisar Ahmed has said PPP’s negotiations with MQM are acceptable as far as the formation of Sindh government is concerned, but any effort aimed at a power-sharing formula at the Centre will force PML-N to devise its own strategy.
Nawaz said it was unbecoming of presidential spokesman to level allegations against him, adding the presidential spokesman should talk according to his worth.
He said this while talking to mediamen at the residence of Captain (r) Safdar in Khiwari at Mansehra Sunday.
Iqbal Zafar Jhagra, Tehmina Daultana, Chaudhry Jaffer Iqbal, Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Abbasi, Sahibzada Attiq ur Rehman, Lt Gen (r) Salah ud Din Tirmizi and other PML leaders also attended the Chehlum of mother of Capt (r) Safdar.

PPP-MQM courtship allays fears of defections in Sindh

News Analysis
Abrar Saeed

ISLAMABAD-Although the move of Pakistan Peoples Party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari to take Muttahida Qaumi Movement into the fold of coalition, on one hand, has allayed the fears of defection in the party in Sindh on the issue of ignoring Makhdoom Amin Fahim, but on the other hand has raised many an eyebrow among the coalition partners, who had serious reservations on taking MQM onboard.
The sources in Pakistan Peoples Party disclosed that Makhdoom Amin Fahim was having a strong command over the party and dropping of his name for the slot of premiership could create troubles for the party Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari, who had taken care of all the aspects before dropping the name of Makhdoom of Hala from the prized list of PM hopefuls.
He had taken his time to get hold of the members of Central Executive Committee of hisparty and at the same time had held series of meetings with hus party’s MNAs, particularly from the Sindh province, to control the damage in case Makhdoom Amin Fahim opted for the defiance course after getting out of premiership race.
The party sources said that Asif Ali Zardari proved too smart for the veteran politician, who had given his prime time to Pakistan Peoples Party, and had plugged all the loopholes before showing Makhdoom the door.
These sources further disclosed that there was a strong realization in the party that Makhdoom Amin Fahim was fully capable to cause severe blow to the party in Sindh and could defect from the party along with a sizeable number of members Sindh Assembly to form government with the support of MQM.
But Asif Ali Zardari also covered that area as well by roping in MQM with the impression that the coalition partners wanted to take all the political forces along in steering the country out of the crises confronting it.
Though the smart move on part of Asif Ali Zardari had allayed the fears of any sort of trouble in Sindh for ignoring Makhdoom Amin Fahim, which were already reduced with the arrival of party Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari for announcing the name of the party candidate for the slot of PM.
But on the other hand the move, which was surely taken in haste, had raised concerns among the coalition partners—Pakistan Muslim League(Nawaz) and Awami National Party—who were not easy with this new development as both the parties had serious differences with MQM.
The sources in the PML(N) and ANP disclosed that their leadership had registered their concerns to the PPP leadership and sought explanation from it that how the new entrant would be accommodated in the power-sharing at Centre.
The sources in the ruling coalition disclosed that after the elections of PM on Monday the coalition partners meeting would likely take up the issue in which PPP would explain the induction of MQM in the coalition and how it would be accommodated in the government formation.
The sources further disclosed that MQM would likely be accommodated in the province and in case of their being accommodated in the Federal Cabinet, it would be from the share of ministries allocated to Pakistan Peoples Party.
At the same time MQM’s becoming the part of the ruling coalition would also put the President in trouble as with the 25 MNAs with the upcoming coalition government the PPP and its coalition partners would come in a position to cross the two-thirds mark in the Parliament required for the impeachment.
