ISLAMABAD - Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM) once claiming to expand its hegemony to Punjab and other province has almost made its offices in Punjab dysfunctional, especially after the Karachi operation.
The MQM has slightly changed its strategy as it has almost stopped its official activities in Upper Punjab and other areas realising infamy, especially after the Karachi operation, background interview and discussion with a senior MQM leader left this impression.
“How would people bear activities of a Sindh-based party when they are receiving dead bodies in connection with Karachi operation,” said the MQM leader from Upper Punjab. He further said that this situation could further persist for more than six months.
It is relevant to mention here MQM has time and again termed the ongoing operation in Karachi as a failure and alleged that incidents of target killings, kidnappings and bank robberies in the city have increased in recent past. The MQM leaders in Senate had also expressed emotionally that ongoing operation in Karachi was aimed only at the MQM.
However, the federal government is so far satisfied with the ongoing target operation of the security forces against criminals and terrorists in Karachi. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif had also remarked in this connection that law and order situation in the metropolis had improved due to efforts of Rangers and police.
It would not be out of place to mention here that MQM after being spotted in the web of plethora of allegations including Scotland Yard’s raid at party head office in the UK, cutting itself to its size had adopted a strategy to limit its political activities to Karachi and Hyderabad only.
The MQM after facing enormous external and internal pressure had already limited its activities and is mainly doing its activities in these two main cities of Sindh.
Though party has successfully survived from this shock, the sources said, the Scotland Yard’s raid at a party head office in the UK in connection with Imran Farooq’s murder case was still being considered as the worst ever crisis for the party.
The MQM sources said that party members from Punjab and other provinces had not been informed about new strategy for not involving them in different important party matters.
MQM activities in Punjab come to a standstill
