Oh the fight for these sites is going on since independence. The "secular" congress govts did not want to hurt muslim sentiments while as usual the Hindu sentiments are easy to be trampled upon.
The Hindus tried to persuade Muslims to give the sites up from 1947 - 1992. That is 45 Long years. But the Muslims did not listen to reason. On 6th December 1992 the hindu anger boiled over and the Babri Masjid was torn down. But even after that 25 years have passed and we have not build the temple and are waiting for the court verdict.
The Hindus have shown extreme patience, something which no other community would have shown - certiainly not the Muslims had the situation been reversed and there would have been a Hindu temple in a Muslim Majority country which had been built by tearing down a Mosque.
The problem is this patience of Hindus has been mistaken for their timidness allowing the "secular" parties to trample over the Hindu Sentiments.
Periodically the Muslims also try to needle the Hindus and when the Hindus retaliate the Muslims pull out their victim card. Case in point - the Gujarat Riots. The narrative in Pakistan, the "secular" media and the left liberal intellegensia is that muslims were killed in the riots. What it completely glosses over is the trigering point of the riots - the burning alive of 59 hindu pilgrims returning from pilgrimage to Ayodhaya by the Sabarmati express. These people also manage to paper over the fact that more than 250 Hindus were also killed in the riots - mostly by police bullets
In conclusion what I am trying to say is that dont mistake hindu patience for cowardice
