The Russian Foreign Ministry demanded on Monday that Kiev’s Western-backed interim government must ensure the security of Russian officials in the country following threats to their safety.
The ministry said a group of so-called Maidan activists attempted to seize a building in Kiev, which is rented by Russia as a cultural center, to use its facilities and equipment for their own purposes.

A vehicle owned by the center was stolen from the premises, but later returned, the ministry added.

“This incident was possible because the new Ukrainian authorities have lost control over the situation in Kiev and an atmosphere of legal nihilism and a total absence of authority has set in,” the Russian ministry said.

“We demand that the authorities in Kiev take appropriate measures to ensure the safety and normal operation of all official Russian representative offices in Ukraine,” the ministry said.

Far-right parties have stepped up their influence in the country following the ouster of President Viktor Yanukovych last month amid often violent protests that left 103 Ukrainians dead and over 1,400 injured.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday the new authorities in Kiev “lack due legitimacy and, worse, are practically unable to control the situation in the country.”

President Vladimir Putin said last Tuesday that Ukrainian "nationalists, neo-Nazis, Russophobes and anti-Semites" bore full responsibility for the civil crisis in the country, which prompted people of Crimea to vote in favor of seceding from Ukraine and rejoining Russia.
