Morocco in talks with Italy to procure 2 FREMM Frigates

According to Rivista Italia Defense (RID) magazine, Morocco has been in talks with Fincantieri to enforce its Navy with two Bergamini class multimission frigates.

The sources underlined that the discussions are ongoing between Morocco and Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri. Morocco also shows interest to ITS Luigi Rizzo (F-595) which is currently in service for the Italian Navy.

The Royal Morrocan is familiar to operate FREMM-class frigates. In 2014, DNCS delivered the ASW-version of the FREMM family to Morocco to replace its Descubierta-class corvette. On completion of procurement 2 additional Bergamini-class frigates, the Royal Moroccan Navy (RMN) will increase its naval power significantly.
The RMN also has a three Sigma-class (10513 variant) multimission light frigate.

FREMM-class frigate design has been increasing its popularity. Indonesian contract is still in LOI stage and look like it will be impossible to be effective if we see the approval foreign loan for defense acquisition until 2024. It is because we also have already signed contract for 2 Iver and 3 CBG submarines already. Not to mentioned some refurbished and upgrade program for Navy older ships. Defense budget is not likely to increase even until 2024 as we see Indonesia faces economic difficulty due to Covid pandemic.

If Covid problem can be solved next year, the rest years under final Jokowi administration will likely focus on economic recovery and this is why I believe our defense budget until 2024 will likely be similar with current budget which is 9.2 billion USD per year.

The reason we still signed the contract is due to stubborn attitude by our new Mindef, Prabowo, but he needs to face both Minister of Planning and Minister of Finance to realize his plan.
