In what could be the most embarrassing poll we've seen in this election cycle, a new survey finds that more New Yorkers have a favorable view of President Trump than of New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
Trump is by no means popular in his home state, as the new Siena College Research Institute poll finds that just 34% of registered voters have a favorable view of him, compared with 63% who have an unfavorable view. But when it comes to de Blasio, just 29% have a favorable view, compared with 53% who view him unfavorably.
So far, the mayor's 2020 presidential campaign has produced more mockery than actual support, which is undetectable in polling.
In a theoretical general election in the overwhelmingly Democratic state, "de Blasio on the Democratic line" would still beat "Trump on the Republican line," according to the poll, as presumably many Democrats who hate de Blasio would hold their noses to support him over giving another four years to a Republican they detest. Even against Trump however, de Blasio doesn't earn a majority of support. Instead, he is ahead of Trump 48% to 36%, with 13% claiming they would seek another candidate or not bother voting.
In contrast, Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D- N.Y., leads Trump 58% to 34% in a hypothetical general election matchup.
Gillibrand, who is struggling to gain traction in the 2020 Democratic primary herself, would beat de Blasio 56% to 25% if the race came down to them.
