Montana train derailment leaves at least 3 dead and scores injured

This is why the tracks and freight cars need to be inspected as per regulations. The freight companies have been cutting back on maintain economic and inspections as much as possible. The infrastructure bill and enforcement of regulations is the only way to minimize the chances this occurs again.

America needs to nationalise her railways and formulate and execute a comprehensive railway transportation plan.

That’s wouldn’t work politically or economically. Us Railways are primarily freight railways. Transportation is done primarily by car or air. Commuter railroads run on dedicated tracks or share the lines with freight companies. Biden is pushing to get funding for revamping Amtrak service on these freight lines as part of a plan to modernize the freight lines for signals and other maintenance.

America had a nationised freight railway until the mid 90s and it was a decent system. CONRAIL

That was in the 70s and only for few years. Frankly, private railroads is the only sustainable way to get funding, because there is limited political will for funding passenger service in the majority of American districts.

It was from 1976 till 1999.

Anyways private railways that run both the infrastructure and the trains aren’t sustainable we have seen this time and time again the world over, the US will have to nationalise the running lines and railyards at the bare minimum if they want to keep their rails safe and functional.

Lookup Railtrack and Network Rail.

They are by and large, safe and functional, but need constant reinvestment beyond the revenue of the private railroads to keep up with what is expected of them, as most freight in the US is moved by rail and demand is only increasing. To this end, congress will just subsidize them to some extent in exchange for them allowing the tracks to be used for passenger service. It is nearly politically impossible to privatize the entire rail network in the US. The compromise has always been dedicated passenger corridors owned wholly by Amtrak or shared between Amtrak and Freight companies. California HSR, Texas HSR, Brightline, and the Northeast corridor are completely or primarily passenger lines and they make up a small part of the network. The vast majority of us tracks are for freight.
