yes..There are some words common with Malayalam/Tamil also(not Sanskrit derived) like pani(work),chei(do),motham(complete) etc etc....
I too can understand Malayalam if i look closely or had more interactions, but i havent had any mallu friends only ones i know who speak are mallu nurses lol.

Wrong mate.Kannada,malayalam and Tamil all fall under south Dravidian category whereas Telugu falls under south central Dravidian.A person who knows four of those languages would know that Kannada ,malayalam and Tamil are closer to each other than they are to Telugu.Telugu even though a Dravidian language differs considerably in subject verb agreement and inflections from those 3 languages.A Telugu person can easily learn any of those 3 languages perfectly but the same cannot be said the other way round.That is the reason you will not find a single tamilian or malayali who can speak fluent Telugu even after working in many Telugu movies but almost every Telugu actor and singer is good at those languages(Spb,janaki,mano,suseela,saritha,rambha,roja,anjali, etc)

Many old Telugu words can be found in Tamil but many are replaced by Sanskrit words now.
