Unfortunately, it is true that many practices and beliefs in various Islamic states are unIslamic, could be cultural reasons behind.

It's been happening since the start of religion, always a tug of war between opposing viewpoints. I would just caution people to pick and choose carefully who they listen to. Much of the fundamentalist preachers today are not only rogue but they have agendas to fulfill (ie making you an extremist).

And most of these are on payroll as well..you will be amazed how many extremist sheikhs have easy access in and out of USA and Europe under the diguise of "praching" yet the actual action behind curtains is different.

I think extremism is a Result of the widespreaded tribal society Structures in the Islamic World and were implementet in Islam during the Ummayyad Khalifa Rule. We should also not forget the Wahabis on the arabian Peninsula have huge financial Resources and sponsor islamist social Networks.
