KABUL (PAN): The National Security Council (NSC) on Sunday ordered the Ministry of Defense (MoD) to purchase four transportation planes for the state-run Ariana Airlines.
At a meeting chaired by President Hamid Karzai, the NSC agreed on the purchase of four Boeing 727 aircraft MoD, as recommended by Finance Minister Omar Zakhelwal.
A statement from the presidential office said the council asked MoD to buy the planes along with necessary equipment with its own funds. However, the statement gave no details of the cost and date for finalising the deal.
Recently, MoD said the 16 C-27 transportation planes purchased for it at a cost of $600 million by the US were useless because they were obsolete and old.
The move was aimed to resolve transportation problems of the Afghan National Army (ANA).
The government has identified rebuilding of the air force as a key priority, saying it remained committed to achieving the goal with its own cash and international aid, particularly from NATO countries.
Revival of the air force has been a major condition the government has set for signing the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) with the US.
Meanwhile, the NSC also approved a suggestion for giving bonus to better-performing members of bomb disposal units of security forces, the statement said.
The proposal was jointly floated by Mod, the Ministry of Interior and the National Directorate of Security (NDS).
