It is a collection of my thoughts, after the recent Mumbai incident about which the reader can either accept or reject. Please share ur views and give reasons rather than one liners. Thank You.
The title may be odd but this is what came to my mind when I was watching the recent peaceful protest in Mumbai and started wondering about these things together.
The mob frenzy and their appetite for destruction is evident as every man on this planet has seen at least once such incident either on a TV set or in real life. Destruction of Public property is done at will in such cases and the police are seen either towards or from the mob. I dont want to go into the whys and whats of the protests. Instead I want to talk of some other things which are incidental to such protests in this collection of my thoughts.
Why Silence of Lambs? Well its a Hollywood movie and its famous but u might wonder does it have to do anything with mob frenzy so let me tell u no it doesnt. It deals with the psychology of a psychopathic serial killer. I was fascinated by the way the antagonists inner circles of mind are revealed and is behavioral patterns are identified. No I dont mean to say that all the violent protestors out there are psychopaths but I sure would like to know the psychology behind this wanton destruction. I mean if we see this academically most of the times these protests start peacefully for the need of permission from the police; next we know 10 buses burnt and 20cars broken etc. So is this pre planned or done on the go? The police must have seen numerous such incidents before so why is it that they always fail.
There have been such violent incidents across our country where after the incident, it is identified that some goons or other anti social elements are identified in the mayhem. Sometime it is let known to the public some time it isnt. The protest at Osmania University and the shameful incident of an MLA being beaten with chappals was telecast 24x7 and the students were criticized for such wild behavior by one and all. However analysts and the media later reported that the attackers were not students but anti social elements well known to the Police, along with some Maoists too!!!
The important thing to note is that why do they do this? Just before they break the window of a car or bus or before they light the bottles for arson if we start lecturing on indirect taxation and how the bus is coming from his pocket like that of other citizens of this country will he stop or will he deem u a disturbance in work and break ur head first? Well we cant find out as it is nigh impossible to do this practically. What can be done is that we can do a psychological profiling of such people. It (destruction of public property) might not be as dangerous as killing or raping for many but the disturbance to society at large and the economic destruction is not negligible is it?
Why psychological profiling is it a fancy word to deflect the inefficiency of the Police or is it necessary? Well it is in my thought needed as when such persons psychology is studied it can throw up some interesting points like when does the action start and when they start behaving like animals suddenly, the tell tale signs etc etc. I mean think about it, if this is a pre planned action then the word frenzy is out of the window then and there. It is pre meditated and pre planned, if so then it is more fascinating. Why because u listen to the speakers words like since so and so things have happened we have to go out there and break and burn. There should be some amount of anger generated in you for this and it has to be bottled up till the time u needs to let it out. How is this done? Alcohol is one answer as given at the right time can act as the catalyst but is it all there that is? These kinds of questions are important and could help the Police in controlling and preventing such incidents. For a common uninformed man like me these are the points that come to thought. Seasoned law force agencies can think of better.
What about the audience in the title, well the audience here are me you the reader and every others standing aside. What are our thoughts, outrage despair etc etc but what then? We protest condemn and then forget. Is there something we can do? Yes there is we can ask for stricter laws where the persons identified of such incidents be put behind bars for longer term. Importantly we can inform the Police of the individuals involved if we can identify them. Or we can enjoy the show as we do and go back to our lives as lambs with silence.
