According to the news of Abdullah Karakuş from Milliyet newspaper, the Machinery and Chemical Industry Corporation (MKEK) is developing "Naval Gun" for the ships.
Under 76/62 mm Naval Gun Development Project: “While the procurement time of this weapons system abroad is 24 months, it is planned to start factory acceptance tests within 12 months of the prototype to be produced with domestic facilities within national design. After the MKEK started to localize its weapon system, the overseas supplier firm lowered the unit price to passivate development project. New developing weapon system will be used on med-to light tonnage ships in the Navy inventory. ”
Because of fast intervals on long range shooting, Naval Gun development differs from standard howitzer and guns, therefore, the development and production of naval guns is really difficult process.
Not much information has been shared about the project details yet. However, in the Turkish Navy inventory, Italian OTO Melara 76 mm Naval guns are using broadly. In the Turkish Navy inventory, OTO Melara 76 mm ship guns are used in Gabya-class frigates, ADA-class corvettes and Rüzgar, Dogan, Yıldız and Kılıç-class patrol/missile corvette and boats. Also In the latest news, it was observed that 76 mm main gun was added to the Burak class corvettes, which are the old ships.
________
"Actually MKEK's domestic ship artillery project is not new. Since 2010, MKEK produced the cannon part of gun systems, under license of the Italian Otomelara and it was both sold to Italy and the Turkish Navy.
The countries that produce and sell this system widely in the world are Russia and Italy. The rest is producing under license. If Turkey could succesfull on indigenization this system, the use of imported weapons will completely cease to exist on their ships or an alternative has been created for each group of weapons."
________
OTO Melara 76 mm gun system has 3 different versions called Compact, Super Rapid and Strales Systems. Turkish Navy ships use the Compact model in a large extent, but on the new ships, mostly prefer Super Rapid model.
In addition, according to the information obtained by Defense Turk, studies on suitable ammunition groups for Naval Gun are carried out by MKEK also.
The fire control system that can be used in this Naval Gun system is currently being produced by ASELSAN. This system is used in ADA class corvettes produced within the scope of MİLGEM Project. In addition, ASELSAN is developing a fire control system for a larger caliber such 127 mm naval gun also. https://www.defenceturk.net/mkek-gemiler-icin-deniz-topu-gelistiriyor
