A BSF constable was killed in a ceasefire violation in north Kashmir's Tangdhar sector in Kupwara district today. Constable Sunil Murmu of the 124 Battalion of the BSF, who was deployed at a forward post at Kanhai in Tangdhar, was critically injured in Pakistani sniper fire along the Line of Control in the Tangdhar sector around 5 pm “He got shot in the stomach and was evacuated to the Army’s 92 Base Hospital in Srinagar in an Army helicopter.

He attained martyrdom at 8.30 pm,” said BSF Inspector General Sonali Mishra. The 28-year-old slain constable hails from Langritar village in Bihar’s Jamui district. He had joined the BSF in 2013.

The ceasefire violation in Tangdhar took place a day after Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire at Churanda in Baramulla district’s Uri sector. Three civilians were injured in the Pakistani firing at Churanda on Monday. Unlike Jammu, where the ceasefire violations have claimed many lives, the LoC in Kashmir has remained relatively peaceful. However, the two truce violations in the past 24 hours have triggered panic among people living in border areas.

Uneasy calm in Uri A day after Indian and Pakistani troops exchanged fire along the Line of Control, an uneasy calm prevailed in the Uri sector of north Kashmir today. Residents, however, continue to live in fear as they apprehend the border tension, which has claimed many lives in the Jammu region, may spread to their area as well.

Three persons, including an elderly woman, were injured when Pakistani troops violated ceasefire along the LoC at Churanda in Uri, 130 km north of Srinagar, in north Kashmir’s Hajipeer Uri sector on Monday evening. The Srinagar-based defence spokesman on Monday said Indian troops retaliated appropriately to the Pakistani firing.

He said unconfirmed reports indicated casualty to Pakistani troops. Media reports from Pakistan suggested that one boy was killed in the ceasefire violation. “The firing stopped on Monday evening and there has been no exchange of fire,” a defence official said. “After the ceasefire violation, the forces are maintaining a high alert as such firing along the LoC is always aimed at helping militants to infiltrate,” the official said.

Residents of Uri said they were living in constant fear as border skirmishes were constantly taking place in the Jammu region. “After Monday’s shelling in Uri, we are really worried,” said a resident of Uri over the phone.

He said Indian soldiers are retaliating the aggression from across the LoC effectively and in equal measure.

“The injured soldier has been hospitalised. The gunfight is going on in Paribal village,” the police added.

Dineshwar Sharma, the home ministry’s special representative to Jammu and Kashmir, will visit the state on 22 February and spend the night at Shopian, where three civilians were killed last month, as part of the government’s efforts to reach out to residents of the district, a senior home ministry official said.

The civilians were killed when Pakistan based Militants opened fire at protesters in Ganawpora village last month.

The official, who asked not to be identified, said that while the ministry of home affairs (MHA) has been briefed about the incident by concerned officers , “it was equally important for the locals to express their side of the story”.

“The government is keen on meeting locals of the district as well as of the village where the firing took place. Everyone, including the families of those who died during the incident will be welcomed if they decide to meet (Sharma) and discuss the issues at hand,” added the official

The J&K police filed an FIR after the firing, naming Major Aditya Kumar in the case. However after Kumar’s father moved the Supreme Court, demanding that the FIR registered against his son be quashed, a bench comprising Chief Justice Dipak Misra and justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud restrained the police from taking any “coercive steps” against the army officers including Major Aditya Kumar.

Sharma confirmed that he will be visiting the state on Thursday but did not confirm that he would be meeting the families of the deceased civilians. Sharma is likely to be briefed about the incident by local police and other security and intelligence agencies based in the valley.

SP Vaid, the Director General of Jammu and Kashmir police, said the “anger among Shopian residents over the firing incident had already being addressed by the filing of an FIR but a central government intervention is a welcome step”.

“The investigation in the case is ongoing. Meanwhile our boys (the J&K police) are in the field talking to youth of Shopian. We have already undertaken confidence building measures to ensure peace and calm in the district.,” he added

The Army has repulsed an attack by the Border Action Team (BAT), a mix of Pakistani regulars and militants, near the Line of Control in the Tangdhar sector of Jammu and Kashmir's Kupwara district, officials said today.

No casualty was reported in the incident that took place last night, they said. A BAT team attacked Indian troops near the LoC in the Tangdhar sector, prompting the Army to retaliate. The exchange of fire continued for nearly an hour and the attack was effectively repulsed, an Army official said.

Hundreds of people living in the border areas in Uri of north Kashmir’s Baramulla district were shifted to a camp after intermittent firing by the Pakistani troops, the latest of which occurred on Thursday night, officials said on Friday.

Three civilians were wounded on Monday evening after Pakistani forces opened fire across the Line of Control in Uri and since then there has been intermittent firing almost every day.

“Due to firing and shelling from across in border areas of Uri about 500 people migrate to safer areas. DC and SSP on spot looking after the people,” director general of state police SP Vaid tweeted.

Officials said that a special camp has been set up a few kilometres away from the affected villages to house the displaced people. Locals and police officials said that although the firing had stopped after Thursday night, people were in the camp fearing further firing.

Baramulla deputy commissioner Nasir Ahmad Naqash and senior superintendent of police Imtiyaz Hussain have promised all the help to the people staying in the camp.

Pakistan violated the 2003 ceasefire agreement with India 882 times last year along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, according to reports.

India accuses Pakistani soldiers of providing cover firing to help militants cross over and carry out attacks in its part of Kashmir—a charge Pakistan denies.

A soldier of an elite para unit of the Army was injured during an anti-militancy operation in north Kashmir’s Bandipora this morning, sources said. The brief gunfight erupted around 5 am when a joint team of the police, CRPF and the Army launched a cordon and search operation at Paribal, Hajin, over 30 km from Srinagar, after an input about the presence of militants.

“As the cordon was being laid, militants opened fired injuring a para soldier,” a police officer said. The militants, however, managed to escape after a brief exchange of fire. Security forces later carried out a combing operation in the area to trace the militants.

As the combing was underway, youth came out on roads and threw stones at security personnel engaged in the anti-militancy operation.

Security personnel fired tear-smoke shells to quell the protest. The anti-militancy operation was later called off around 10 am. — TNS

A day after a Pakistan army helicopter came close to the Line of Control in Poonch, India and Pakistan exchanged heavy firing and mortar shelling at the Uri sector in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district and Tangdhar in Kupwara district.

As the LoC skirmishes were on in Uri, the senior-most Border Security Force officer in Kashmir claimed today that two Pakistani soldiers were killed across the border from the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district on Wednesday in Indian action.

As the LoC skirmishes were on in Uri, the senior-most Border Security Force officer in Kashmir claimed today that two Pakistani soldiers were killed across the border from the Tangdhar sector of Kupwara district on Wednesday in Indian action.

“The BSF and Army gave a befitting reply to the ceasefire violation by the Pakistan army (in Tangdhar after the killing of a BSF constable) and reliable sources have confirmed that there have been two casualties on their side,” said Inspector General, BSF, Sonali Mishra, after the wreath-laying ceremony of BSF Constable Sunil Murmu, who was killed in the Tangdhar sector in Pakistani sniper fire, at Humhama on the outskirts of Srinagar.

She said Pakistan did not want India to have a peaceful atmosphere. “They (Pakistan) do not want peace and tranquillity in India. It is using different methods of ceasefire violations, sniping, BAT action, infiltration and it has been their plan not to allow peace here,” she said, adding that the ceasefire violation could be their strategy for infiltration. Mishra said the forces were ready to tackle any situation along the LoC. “We are ready for infiltration, BAT action, standoff fire, sniping… alertness along the LoC is always high,” she said. Meanwhile, massive shelling took place on Thursday at Hajipir in the Uri sector, some 120 km from Srinagar. At least three houses were damaged in the Pakistani shelling which began around 8 am. The Army responded in full strength, sources said Srinagar-based defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said: “Unprovoked ceasefire violation by Pakistan in the Uri sector began around 8 am and our troops retaliated,” he said.

A police official said Pakistani violated ceasefire in the Churanda, Batgrah, Tilwari and Silikote, Hatlanga areas of Hajipir. The houses were damaged at Tilawari village. Many people fled their homes in the sector after the shelling intensified. “There is no report of any casualty,” he said.

On Monday evening, three civilians, including a woman, were injured in the shelling in Churnada village. A day later, BSF Constable Sunil Murmu of 124 Battalion was killed in the Tangdhar sector in Pakistani sniper fire.

On Wednesday, the Army and BSF targeted Pakistani posts from Tangdhar. Meanwhile, despite escalation of tension along the Uri sector, the routine LoC trade remained unaffected.

"We have dispatched two ambulances and more vehicles will be deputed as Pakistan announcement makes the situation more serious," sub-divisional magistrate Dr. Sagar D. told The Hindu.

At least 18 families are stranded due to the firing and shelling that started at Uri's Silikote.

The local administration has declared an emergency. "We are preparing accommodation so that the population is shifted," he said.

According to the Army, Pakistan troops started firing at 11.50 a.m. on Saturday.

Three houses were hit by shells so far, according to the preliminary reports.

Around 480 have already been displaced in shelling since February 22. "We expect more displacement today," said the sub-divisional magistrate.

SRINAGAR: The exchange of heavy fire between India and Pakistan which mostly engulfed border areas of Jammu region this winter has now crossed over to Line of Control in Uri area of north Kashmir witnessing artillery fire from both sides for past few days with around 500 people from different frontier villages shifted to safer places including a government school in Uri main town.

Firing in Uri continued intermittently for past four days till Saturday morning and more than 35 families from around six villages including Churanda, Tilawari, Sallikoot and Hathlanga have shifted to main town Uri. Many others have moved to safer places in nearby areas. Fresh firing from across LoC was reported in Hajipeer and Silikoot villages on Saturday after 11:45am and Army claims that they were retaliating continuously.

Baramullah district administration officials have made arrangements in a government girls higher secondary school of Uri for night stay, food and sanitation of the impacted population and also set up a control room to monitor any future developments.

“We have kept arrangements in the school and more than 250 people were present in the school during the day. Many people prefer to stay with their relatives or acquaintances during the night,” Deputy Commissioner of Baramullah,Nasir Ahmad Nawash told ET.

Uri has witnessed firing from both sides, after a gap of few years. The cross LoC trade facilitation center is also located here in Salamabad. However, the trade has not been impacted due to recent firing and was conducted for four days this week.

“Many families are staying back in their villages, but we have kept the facilities ready and also provided phone numbers for 24*7 help for anybody. If firing doesn’t resume tonight, on Saturday a team will also inspect the villages impacted by the firing and record the damages,” Sub District Magistrate of Uri, D S Datatatray told ET.

“Either government should have the ability to stop firing on both sides or they should relocate us to safer places and provide us land so that we can sustain our families,” a border resident from Churunda, who had shifted to the school in main town Uri, told reporters here.

“Due to firing/shelling from across in border area of Uri abour 500 people migrate to safer area. DC/SSP on spot looking after people,” J&K police chief S P Vaid tweeted.

India and Pakistan signed a ceasefire agreement in November 2003, which both countries have violated several times, especially when the political relationship between the two nuclear neighbors deteriorates. The exchange of fire along LoC and international border has become more frequent over the past two years as political relations between the two nuclear neighbors hit a new low after initial bonhomie, when Narendra Modi-led NDA took over in New Delhi in 2014.

Meanwhile, in Tangdhar area of LoC in north Kashmir mortar shelling and firing continued on forward posts intermittently for three days now. The Army also claims to have foiled a Border Action Team operation from across the LoC; an attempt of militants to raid a forward post supported by heavy shelling from multiple posts.

After a gap of 15 years, when India and Pakistan inked a ceasefire agreement, the troops on both sides today exchanged artillery shells across the Line of Control (LoC) in the Uri sector, triggering panic in the area as more residents were evacuated to safer places.

As the ceasefire violation along the LoC has now almost become daily, the use of artillery by the two armies has effectively put the 2003 agreement in tatters. The artillery shells were fired despite bad weather in the area.

From Monday, the firing in Hajipir, Uri sector, over 120 km from Srinagar, was restricted to mortar shelling and small arms fire but things escalated on Saturday morning as heavy artillery was exchanged. There were, however, no reports of casualities even as seven villages, having a population of 8,000, were affected.

“We responded to their artillery shelling and targeted their posts,” defence sources said.

Uri Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sagar D Doifode said in the wake of artillery exchange, a high alert had been sounded in Uri.

“We are taking all precautions and have evacuated residents from the shelling-prone area,” Doifode told The Tribune.

Srinagar-based defence spokesman Col Rajesh Kalia said Pakistan violated ceasefire around noon in the Uri sector.

“The unprovoked ceasefire violation by Pakistan in the Uri sector since 11.50 am. Our troops retaliated,” said the spokesman.

There were reports earlier this week that Indian troops had damaged a Pakistani bunker in the Hajipir sector.

Pakistani troops today targeted many areas and Indian posts along the LoC in Churanda, Silikote, Balakote and Tilawari villages.

Two houses were damaged in the Pak shelling in Silikote area and many residents were evacuated. A villager said announcements were made by the Pakistan army from mosques across the LoC since the morning, asking residents on this side to vacate houses.

“These announcements, followed by intense shelling, created a panic in the village,” he said.

The local administration has pressed into service scores of vehicles, including ambulances, to evacuate civilian population.

“A high alert has been sounded in Uri and even NHPC officials have been told to alert their men as they have two power houses here,” the SDM said.

The latest flare-up began on Monday when Pakistan violated the ceasefire in the Uri sector, injuring three civilians. A day later BSF Constable Sunil Murmu was killed in the Tangdhar sector in Kupwara district. On Wednesday, two Pakistani soldiers were killed when a counter-assault was launched by the Indian Army and BSF in Tangdhar. On Thursday, a fresh ceasefire violation took place in the Uri sector and around 500 villagers were shifted to a rehabilitation centre. On Friday, the Army claimed to have foiled a Border Action Team attack in the Tangdhar sector.

A former militant was killed while a policeman was injured in a grenade attack near police station in Tral area of south Kashmir's Pulwama district on Monday.

Police said the incident took place on Monday afternoon when a burqa (veil) clad person came out from police station and was stopped by a sentry. "During this somebody threw a grenade towards police station in a bid to take out the burqa clad . The incident left militant dead and a policeman injured," a police spokesperson said.

The slain militant, identified as Mushtaq Chopan alias Haroon, a resident of Tral, was arrested along with his two associates by security forces in north Kashmir's Sopore area on January 9.

State Police chief Shesh Pal Vaid confirmed the killing of Chopan in the attack. "A militant Mushtaq Ahmad Chopan died in grenade explosion when challenged by sentry while trying to escape from Police Station Tral," he tweeted.

Earlier, in a separate incident, militants escaped security cordon after exchanging heavy fire with army in Hajin area of north Kashmir's Bandipora district on Monday morning.

Reports said a civilian was also injured during the clashes that broke out after security forces cordoned off the area following specific inputs about the presence of some militants.

The twin incidents came a day after two policemen were killed by militants in two separate attacks in Srinagar and Budgam areas.
