What's new

Mikhail Gorbachev has passed away

Whay Gorbi did led the world to a unipolar hell where USA bullied everyone and desteoyed free nations. His actions led to expansion of the biggest terror organization in the world the ao called NATO, he helped USA to completely colonize Germany and hence all of Europe.

Question is, did USSR require reforms? The answer is yes. But under some conditions. Most important condition was, these reforms shouldn't have been western imposed ones.

My condolences to his family.
As for the gent a hero for the West but quite loathed in his homeland.
Not surprisingly, because USSR was an enemy for the West.

But personally I have no sympathy for USSR. USSR had wronged us Muslims in the Soviet-Afghan war.

Therefore I have no warmth for Russia.

Also USSR was an Atheistic nation under Communism.

I don't have a problem with "Socialism" or "Islamic Socialism."

Atheism is incompatible with our state ideology of Sunni Islam.

Gorbachev was a thoroughly decent man that tried to get the Soviet Union in amongst civilized nations. He took over a country with an economy that was in free fall. The arms race with the United States had bankrupted the Soviet Union.
Perestrojka and Glasnost allowed finally the citizens of the Soviet Union to express their personal opinions. For many, that was leaving the Soviet Union.
What killed the Soviet Union was not Gorbachev, it was the attempt of a military coup which opened up for Yeltsin to let the Russian Federation leave the Soviet Union. That made the Soviet Union obsolete.

Gorby sabotaged Russia's war effort to support socialist Afghanistan and broke up USSR. He is not a hero to Russians. He is a traitor. The moral of the story is. Never have a bald guy as president.

Gorbachav was the one responsible for eneding the cold war. However the price Soviet Union paid was too high. It is too early to judge whether he was good or bad for "Russia" but I admire him because he wasa a peacful man and let reunification of Germany go ahead without a hitch.

The Western media portrays Ukrainians as super humans. How about Syrians? Invaded by dozens of countries including the US, and still fought them off despite no military support from anyone. Ukrainian fighting spirit is nothing compared to Syrian fighting spirit.

Syria is in a civil war.

Ukraine is in civil war since Euro Maidan in 2013 / 2014.

What civil war ? 80% of the country is under firm control of government. Cut off Russian support. The separatists will collapse

In Syria the 80% Sunni majority would slaughter Assad clan if they get the chance

Same can be said in Syria where rebels control only a single major city Idlib city.

It is extremely difficult to swim against the current, and defy all the old positions of orthodoxy and safety.

What Gorbachev did was the equivalent of what, in a forgotten era, was another repudiation of old ties and old loyalties in the interest of the people. He was, in effect, the Philippe Egalite of the end of the Russian Revolution, making his appearance at the end, as Louis Philippe, Philippe Egalite, had made his appearance at the beginning. Like that person, Gorbachev too was unpopular with both those whom he had rejected and abandoned, and those whose cause he took up with zeal and purpose.

It is convenient to suppose that he is a great example of the urges and impulses that strengthen an elite clique to hold on to power, and to deny in robust terms any merit in the voices for reform that are heard in such circumstances. So he must be held up as an example in the other great stronghold of Communism, as, to be precise, a horrible example, one to serve as a bogeyman for the revolutionary.

[Later] There are enough examples in earlier comments to underline this point, and to explain who are his most bitter critics. :enjoy:

At the end, we can only honour him for his integrity. Humanity needs more people like him.
