Dozens of migrants refused entry into France went on hunger strike on Saturday at the border crossing in Ventimiglia in Italy, where they organised a sit-in and threatened to block traffic.

French border police told AFP they had been ordered not to let through the migrants, many of whom came from Somalia, Eritrea, the Ivory Coast and Sudan, and hoped to travel onwards to Germany, Britain or Sweden to request asylum.

"We are not going back, we need to pass," read a large banner held aloft by one group of protesters, while another read: "We need freedom."

Curled up on pieces of cardboard, sheltering where possible under trees and bushes, men, women and children who had made the journey from Libya by boat to Italy said they would block traffic if they were not allowed to pass.

While the women and children ate food provided by the Red Cross, the men refused.

"We won't eat," said 20 year-old Mustapha Ali. "We spent all of yesterday in the heat, and last night in the rain and cold. If we must die here, no need to eat."

A record number of 1,439 migrants were intercepted this week by French police in the Alpes Maritimes area of southeast France, with 1,097 returned to Italy.

Mohamed from Sudan told AFP he had arrived in Sicily with his brother and travelled by car and train as far as Menton in France -- just across the border -- where he had been arrested at the train station and escorted back to Italy.

"In Darfur there is a lot of war and violence, they massacre people, we want peace," he said.

The Schengen open borders accord means migrants landing in Italy can usually easily travel through neighbouring France, Austria, Switzerland and Slovenia as they seek to make it to Britain, Germany and Scandinavia.

But border controls have been temporarily reintroduced due to a recent summit of G7 leaders in Germany.

The mayor of Ventimiglia, Enrico Ioculano, told Sky TG 24 television that some of the migrants appeared to be getting through to France anyway by train. "There are currently around 50 migrants at Ventimiglia's train station, the same number as there were a few days ago, though the faces have changed," he said.

"At least 200 have come and gone, I would guess they got into France by train," he said.

The suspension of Schengen has been increasing the pressure on Italy, where reception centres are at breaking point with about 76,000 people accommodated nationwide.

The build-up has seen hundreds of migrants including three-month-old infants bedding down in Milan Central and Rome's Tiburtina train stations.

If France allows them then it should make it mandatory for all these people to get integrated into the French society & French culture

A nation cannot be blackmailed due to fuckups by fanatics on some other part of the world.Your country,go back.Pick up a weapon and get your own country back or die trying..instead of running and imposing urself on the world.

Hi,
This was bound to happen with Western imposed democracy in whole of Arab from destruction Of iraq to Libya.

This all is nothing but a simple reaction

These people can't integrate to our society (a modern society) and that's a fact.

That's not our fault if they come from savage/poor/corrupt countries.

Hi, But it was your fault to bomb in the name of freedom and democracy in first place, the looting of their natural resources. I remember french played a very dominating role in libya bombing, I guess that was the only operation where France was able to show off rafaels capability

Then i hope that they won't be allowed to enter our country, they can be in hunger strike at anytime they want, but we don't need more alien people that couldn't integrate in our society, that the French people don't want, that we don't need. (The "I come to work,to get a better life" doesn't work,we are in crisis, there's an high unemployment rate,we don't need their "services"..)

Libyans wanted us to intervene. We thought after Gaddafi was overthrown they could build a new country with a decent govt. Yes we probably shouldn't have intervened there, but it's not our fault if they aren't civilised.

Hi,
What Libya wanted was a smooth transition, not a chaos, and it's not as if French did this out of goodness of their heart. Having had an empire just like britain used to, i wasn't expecting anything less from Imperial descendants.

If you really wanted to help (which ofc no Western country wants) You could have immediately after bombing, started to work on infrastructure, brought your education system which is highly regarded , could have provided everything that new built country would require. Its not so hard for a country like France with his rich and powerful heritage to support weaker countries like Libya. In that way not only you would have gain good foothold but good market too.

Alas who would want french companies to pay taxes when you get your illegal trade done without any problem

Yes we could have helped them,if they weren't fighting each other and putting the chaos everywhere they are.
We thought they would unite together and develop their new country.... but no.

You should take in some Rohinagaya... show some humanity to @Desert Fox

Meh,where are S Arabia,Qatar and the rest to help "fellow" muslims ?

Hi,
The whole chaos was caused by you guys in first place !

-Libyans revolted against Gaddafi.
-They wanted us to intervene.
-We intervened,Gaddafi was overthrown.
-Then started fighting each other and putting the chaos everywhere, can't be civilised and be united to create a new country.

Yet it's our fault. lel.

Nevertheless I do think intervening was a big mistake.
