You're underestimating the cartels. ISIS is more like a rag-tag militia while cartels are much more organized, better equipped, many of em are ex-commandos and tons of cash at their disposal. Infact, ISIS backed off after receiving threats from the Sinaloa cartel

Your wrong isis is not a rag tag militia when majority of its fighters came from military backgrounds especially from Baathist iraq. Then you have jihadists that fought in Chechnya, Afghanistan and other places where Jihadists might have been present.

Israfil Yilmaz the Dutch Turk that fought for Isis served in the Dutch army before going to syria. Al Shishani served in the Georgian army even fought against Russia in 2008

Cartels used to be rag tag but now they are all soldiers because most cartels all came from the Mexican military it is also said they are hiring mercs.

Times have changed criminals and terrorists have become more like soldiers rather than rag tag militias or gangs. Taliban has changed a lot too from normal peasant clothes to sporting camos and looking like a regular soldier.

This is the US narrative which nobody on PDF wants to believe.

Basically Saddam's career military leaders were fired and told to go back to their farms and live quiet lives like good peasants...like what could go wrong....
