News - Metro rail to be profitable project: Expert
Dhaka, Apr 7 (UNB) - The proposed Dhaka City Metro Rail Project will be a profitable project through utilising the planning, design, and construction and operational experience of the Kolkata Metro Rail project, the first metro rail project in the subcontinent, said an expert.

“At present, there’re over 16 kilometers of underground rail track in Kolkata. Along with the elevated metro rail and Indian railway, an integrated rail network is playing an important role in the mass transportation in Kolkata,” former chief engineer of Kolkata Metro Rail Project Ashukh Sengupta told a seminar here on Saturday.

Engineering Department of the Institute of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) organised the seminar, titled ‘Kolkata Metro: Planning, Design, Construction and Operation’ at IEB seminar room.

Eminent urban planner and IEB former president Prof Jamilur Reza Choudhury, IEB president and Rajuk chairman Nurul Huda, general secretary and Agrani Bank director M Abdus Sabur and vice-chairman Prof Dr Munaz Ahmed Nur, among others, spoke at the seminar held with chairman of IEB Engineering Department Kazi Khairul Bashar in the chair.

In a densely populated city like Dhaka, metro should be profitable. We need a system to move people around more quickly and efficiently within the city and from its suburban outskirts.

Depends on what you mean by profitable, operational profitability will happen but sunk costs are unlikely to be recovered soon. The city however will benefit as a whole even if it is difficult to quantify it.

we need this crap, moving in dhaka is unbearable with a damn car in the day time. In most cases you can walk to your destination faster than in a damn car....the traffic is ludicrous!

Bangladeshis can hardly make One Meal Per Day.

Can they Afford the Cost?

Just go n check India has more hunger and malnutrition people percentage wise then Bangladesh.

If Bangladesh would not have manage the money it would not have gone for the project.

Well metro is a must for Dhaka city. Hopefully it will also be affordable for common bangladeshis.
Once we get metro we should abolish all rishkas from at least dhaka city.

no benefit giving blaming them actually govt is not doing enough for public transport. so every family who can think they can some manage a car are buying car . car increasing 100 per day in the street of dhaka but no new road . result traffic jam in every parts of the city .

Oh well, I guess now you guys understand how we feel when ever you guys bring up poverty and toilets into Indian infrastructural or defence threads.:coffee: One troll post and BD people start going haywire.

On topic: Good for Dhaka and congrats :yahoo:

Actually we need more cities. Dhaka most likely is the densely populated city on earth. Making new roads won't solve the problem
for 2 corore people living in a area the size of gaza strip. Dhaka is uninhabitable really. We need to make new cities with proper
landscape planning. That's the only solution.Decentralization is a must if BD has to march forward.

It is a must , now a days nothing moves in Dhaka road. People are purchasing cars more and more- one of the main reason of traffic jams in Dhaka.
