Mehdi Masroor arrested, confesses to operating ISIS Twitter handle: Cops - The Times of India

NEW DELHI/BENGALURU: Bengaluru police on Saturday confirmed the arrest of ISIS Twitter Mehdi Masroor Biswas.

"Mehdi Masroor has confessed that he was operating the ISIS Twitter account, @ShamiWitness," Karnataka DGP Pachau told mediapersons in a press conference.

Biswas has been booked under Section 125 of IPC for waging war against any Asiatic power in alliance with the government of India.

Mehdi Masroor used to attended office in the day and operate his Twitter account in night, the DGP added.

Mehdi Masroor is an engineer by qualification and has been working for an MNC since 2012, the DGP said.

Earlier, the father of alleged handler of the Islamic State Twitter account, @ShamiWitness, has told Times Now that his son was not linked to any jihadi activity.

"I don't believe my son is linked to any jihadi activity, his email account has been hacked," he told Times Now.

"I stayed with my son for so many months. He had no times for such activity," the father of man who was alleged to operate Twitter handle @ShamiWitness told Times Now.

Bengaluru Police were on the hunt for "Mehdi" who was reported to be working as an executive based out of Bengaluru. Britain's Channel 4 News had aired the report regarding the country's IT capital's link with the Twitter account that is followed by foreign jihadis.

The British news broadcaster did not reveal his full name as he said his life would be in danger. A total of 39 Indian workers are still under the captivity of the deadly IS.

The account was shut down after the report surfaced. In its report, 'Channel 4' on Friday said that the man operating the account is an executive in the city working for an Indian conglomerate and had been able to remain anonymous "until now" and avoiding questions about his role in the Islamic State's propaganda war.

Channel 4 News had said its investigation had however revealed that the man operating the account is called Mehdi and he is an executive in Bangalore working for an Indian conglomerate.

"His tweets, written under the name Shami Witness, were seen two million times each month, making him perhaps the most influential Islamic State Twitter account, with over 17,700 followers," it said.

  • BENGALURU: A Bengaluru-based man who allegedly operated Islamic State's most influential Twitter account was arrested from his house by the Bengaluru Police last night. He has been accused of waging war against a friendly nation and violation of Information Technology Act.

Mehdi Masroor Biswas, the person behind Twitter handle "@shamiwitness", is a 24-year-old engineer who worked for a multinational in Bengaluru, police said. He moved to the city in 2011 and stays in Bengaluru's upscale southeast suburb. Police said he is an alumnus of West Bengal Institute of Technology. @Skull and Bones :(:(:pissed::pissed::pissed:

Sources say Mehdi did not have any direct link with Al Qaida or Islamic State group and nothing as yet suggests he was in direct touch with any jihadi element. He appears to be a case of self-radicalisation.

Mehdi collected data, videos from web to post on Twitter, and majority of his tweets and posts have been deleted. Agencies are now trying to reconstruct Mehdi's cyber activities. So far, no anti-India activity or tweets posted by Mehdi have been found. Nothing has been found to infer Mehdi suggested any attacks in India, say sources.

Mehdi seems more of a propagandist for Islamic State, not a recruiter or jihadi himself, sources add.

The National Investigation Agency was reportedly aware of the Twitter account "@shamiwitness" and was tracking it even before Britain's Channel 4 News came up with its report on the account holder.

UK based Channel 4 news on Thursday claimed that the man who operated the Twitter handle is one of the most influential recruiters for the Islamic State and is based in Bengaluru.

"His tweets, written under the name Shami Witness, were seen two million times each month, making him perhaps the most influential Islamic State Twitter account, with over 17,700 followers," the channel said.

Mahdi has since shut down the account, which the channel said was a leading source of information between jihadis, supporters, and recruits.
